My brother wracked-up a huge bill on our parents home number calling those 900 sex numbers in the late 80's.  Then did it AGAIN after he was busted and had to pay my father back the (hundreds of ?) dollars!!
What a loser.

I remember my dad asking me about the charges, which I was shocked about and denied, then he asked my brother and he admitted to it.  How embarrassing!

Fun fact:   mid-90s in the 303 area code that number belonged to a guy named Bruce who did not appreciate humor

In college my friend got a whole bunch of free minutes for porn numbers somehow.  We would call and just chat.  They always enjoyed a break.

I remember one of my friends dialing 1-800-but-fuck in high school. You could select an option to have a "Honk if you're Horny" bumper sticker or have a return call.

As a Telco employee in the business office, I remember what a PITA it was to try and sustain the charges on customer's billing statements.

"Nobody in my house made those calls!"

"I have three teenage boys, but they would never do it, and I know about everything they do!" An actual response I still remember.

I was working as a security guard in the late 80's.  Stopped into the office on a payday to pick up my check and got to watch as a coworker got fired.

He had been using the client's phone to call 900 numbers during his shift (when he was the only person on the site) and drinking on the job.  He came in around 9am, already shitfaced drunk, to pick up his check and was instead handed the client's phone bill, $600+

I remember them being 800 numbers, free call until you get to "press 1 to pay by credit card, press 2 to bill this call to your home number".

My brother pressed 2.

Two weeks later my mom said "Alan, we got a pretty big phone bill, do you know anything about it?"

"I didn't know you had to pay to talk to lesbians!!!!"

Guess he knew something about it. My mom called the phone company, complained that he was under 18 and they voided the charges and blocked her line from billed calls.

I always wondered how many of those women were some fat slob in a chair with a beer and a cigarette, like on the Beavis and Butthead episode.

A buddy of mine racked up a $500+ phone bill from those numbers.

His dad was pissed and told him to get a hooker, they were cheaper.

I never called a 900 number, but the had lots of 800 numbers that could direct you there. They were great for pranks. My favorite was: 800.328.4475, which worked out to be 800FATGIRL. The hambeast on the other end would answer with something like “ Hey, you big stud. Ready for some chubby loving? How about you roll me in some flour and poke me in the wet spot?”

I worked in a parts store in those days and we would call the number, put it on hold then tell the manager there was a pissed off customer that he needed to speak to right now.

I remember hearing how a few grandparents received big phone bills after their grandchildren visited. It's hard to believe people actually called those numbers.

One day I went to my brother's apartment and he said look at those people.  The guy had called one of those numbers and talking to a woman to eventually told her to come live with him and she showed up with two children.

There was a couple locally, that set up their own 900 number. They would walk up to peoples houses claiming to have broken down and ask to make a call for a ride. They would then call their own 900 number and stay on line a few minutes. Most people didnt notice the small increase in their bill. And might hit 50 houses in a day

Back to my Telco days again, I saw a customer's bill with $25K in 900 charges for one month. He was only calling to complain that his call waiting wasn't working, not the charges on the bill. I could see that he had had $17K in 900 charges on his previous months bill. The bill had been paid, not credited or adjusted.

IRRC, the calls were $600/per 15 minutes to something called "Care Line". Didn't know what that was, but was a bit curious how he was paying for them.

We used to call them from the phones at work, and then transfer the calls to other employees.
