If anyone is looking for a series out of the anime "norm" check out Kaza no Yojimbo.
It's based off the Japanese movie Yojimbo, which was made into the Clint Eastwood western "A fistful of dollars". I've added both to my netflix queue

I'm gonna have to disagree.
I think this hatred of dubs goes back to some of the crappy english dubbing from the 80's and early 90's.  I watched the first dub of Akira and it was awful.  None of the voices seem to fit with the characters and the lip synching was sometimes off.

As anime got more popular in the US studios were able to get more money to raise the quality of the dubs.  I think right now many English dubs are just as good and sometimes better than the Japanese dialog.

Examples;
English Cowboy Bebop is arguably better than Japanese Cowboy Bebop.  They got three very good voice actors, Steve Blum, Wendee Lee, and Beau Billingslea.

I think Funimation has done an excellent job with its most recent shows.  Full Metal Alchemist got a huge cast.  Vic Mignogna was awsome as Ed Elric.   English Desert Punk was hilarious.  Humor is very cultural-centric and the FUnimation people did a stand-up job localizing the show for the US.  I thought Junko's Japanese voice actress had too high-pitch a voice for a character like Junko.  Actually I think alot of Japanese female voices are way too high-pitch.

The Miyazaki films were brought over by Disney and Pixar's John Lasseter did the English production for many of the films.  They were able to get actual Hollywood actors to the voice acting.  Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind had Patrick Stewart, Uma Thurman,  Edward James Olmos.  Porco Rosso had Michael Keaton and Cary Elwes.  People with way more talent than anything the in the Japanese industry.

I like English Dubs and to hell with you Fan Boys

Not all dubs suck, but some of them are really bad.  Not entertainingly bad.  Not so-bad-it's-good bad, like some of the cheaper 1970s kung fu movies.  Some of them are oh-my-god-make-it-stop bad.

I think the main reason for this is the relative sizes of the talent pools for voice acting in the US and Japan.  There it's big business, and some of the better known voice actresses may get parts in live-action acting or record deals as "idol singers."  Megumi Hayashibara and Kotono Mitsuishi come immediately to mind.  In Japan they're about as famous as the movie stars are here.

Voice acting in the US, on the other hand, is a tiny niche for well-nigh unknowns, and more than a few English dubs of foreign films, not just anime, end up sounding like the importer's janitor and his girlfriend did all the voices themselves on a shoebox tape recorder, working from a Babelfish translation of the script.

Cowboy Bebop had a superb English dub because the US licensee managed to get Steven Blum and Wendee Lee.

Neon Genesis Evangelion's US licensee, on the other hand, got Tiffany Grant (who has actually produced excellent work when the director was able to restrain her from chewing on the virtual scenery, but this was not one of those times) and Spike Spencer.  At least they were better than the first dub of Urusei Yatsura from AnimEigo, which is pretty much in the oh-my-god-my-ears-are-bleeding completely unwatchable category.

Gunslinger Girl was pretty good, but it needed more episodes to finish out the story line. Definitely one of my favorite animes though.

Oh, and I don't hate Eva, but I wouldn't watch any of it twice. Shinji's a little bitch, and he should have hooked up with Rei even though she was a fake person modeled after his own mother.

If anyone here likes Naruto, they should be banned.

One of the best gun porn anime ever.

Off the top of my head:

WA2000
CZ75B
P90
1897 Trenchgun
FiveSeven
Dragunov SVT
G3
Steyr Aug

The guns in blue I purchased because of this anime.

I have a copy of "GiTS2" I got from a Japanese import store. It is a GORGEOUS movie... But it makes next to no sense.

I need to rent the dub and find out what the movie is about.

I was waiting until the end of the anime before I downloaded them.

The CGI Ryuk looks freaking great and the actor who plays L is uncanny.

There is a manga if you wish to either continue the story (the manga is still ongoing) or fill in the gaps skipped over due to time constraints.

I have been hesitant to get Gunslinger Girls because its premise I find a little TOO creepy, in spite of the gun porn

It is actually pretty innocuous. Surprisingly, while they could have gone super creepy, they choose not to.

That said, it would not be the first series I'd show people.

FYI: Samurai 7 has been playing on IFC (Independent Film Channel) off and on lately.  Usually see it on Sundays, early morning.  Pretty good, loosely based on The Seven Samurai.

I've really liked Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and a few others.  I could probably find a lot more I'd like, but I've been resisting another time and money sink.  Actually didn't care for Akira or Ghost in the Shell despite how many times I hear them recommended.  Just personal tastes, I guess.

Never saw any of the Macross series but I read a lot of the book adaptations when I was younger.  Just learned recently that a lot of those books were ghost written by one of my favorite authors of my younger days.  I really should watch some of the series.

You watched the English dub with Spike Spencer and Tiffany Grant, didn't you?  Spike Spencer's characters tend to be whiny sarcastic little bastards, and Tiffany Grant's turn into shrill cackling over-the-top psychobitches if the director doesn't keep her on a short leash.

You owe it to yourself to watch the subtitled version with the original Japanese cast.  It is a rather different story about completely different people--who are on the whole much more sympathetic than the ones portrayed by the English language cast.

Oh, and I watched one episode of Naruto and still can't figure out what the fuss is about.  It looks like just another generic shonen martial arts anime to me, but to each his own, I suppose.

Which I'm told is weird because both target the same audience or whatever.

According to a few sources (including Wikipedia and IMDB, which I know aren't 100% reliable) an American studio, Sunbow Productions, who also did the original G.I. Joe cartoon, did Transformers. Also, Optimus Prime has a "Gundam's head" because that's what the toy looks like. A lot of G1 Transformers toys were just taken from a few of Takara's lines, since Hasbro is the American importer for Takara, so there are some definite Japanese influences in the G1 toys.

I watched the Bounto Arc on YouTube, and I thought it was boring. The newer Arc (Arancar or what ever) seems okay, but I gave up on the show and just read the manga once in a great while now. Even the manga drags the story out too long for me to enjoy.

Animes like Bleach, Inuyasha, Naruto, and Dragonball Z never appealed to me though. Give me something with a little more snap that's a little more realistically paced. JMO.

I just finished Spriggan (the movie) last night.   Thumbs down ... no plot and poor character development.

That said, it gets an A+ for gun detail.  HK91s, MP5s, etc were all very realistic.  The main character even field strips a Sig P226 and it's dead-on accurate.

However, no amount of gun porn can save a bad story.

Why did it not occur to me that there would be a wiki for Transformers...

I don't remember Sunbow at all.  And the art work looks like a lot of Japanese mecha shows of the mid eighties.  Like Macross and Mospeada.  Besides the transforming machines, the way they drew terrain and special effects like the gunfire and explosions looked like the Japanese shows.

If Sunbow was the producer, where were the actual cells drawn?

My friends and I are running an anime convention this year. Two years ago we successfully ran it but haven't been able to until now.

As we are college students the school will not let use confirm the date until august. so We hope it will be on October 5-7

We have a preliminary website at FITcon2007. But that is not where it will be for very long. I'll get you guys an updated link as soon as possible.

For now it has as much info as is in this post... in fact this post might have more info than the website.

The school is Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL. If you are familiar with the school... it will be held in the gym(Clemente Center) primarily with viewing rooms in some of the near by buildings.
