If you havent read the manga for Chainsawman, just know that Sawatari was on the right track when she immediately knew an ability that "bullshit" had to be Makima.
Or just read the manga, because it's a crazy fucking ride and I doubt they'll be able to keep this level of quality up indefinitely. |

My personal opinion is the story telling, development, pacing, and action within the greed island portion is good. The action, story (outside of my own quibbles with the premise), character introductions and character development within the ant arc are great, definitely won't argue that. And the arc ending was also great. But, to me, the ant arc pacing through most of it seemed just barely a few notches better than DBZ. And I suppose that is what was off-putting to me. Also agree that the development of Gon is certainly good, and does feel more as a natural development of being in the environment and his contacts versus a baked in default Jesus personality that so many MCs have. "Blank slate" I think might be a little too open-ended, being I think Gon appears to have a natural disposition towards being good, but is accepting and open enough to hear and consider all sides of something or creatures before deciding. But once something's decided, he sees it through. The "deprogramming" and growth as a human of Killua, is actually more stark to me than Gon through the series. As Crunchyroll has been filling in their catalog with older series from Funimation, I’ve started to explore some of them.
Currently binge-watching RideBack, a story that features hybrid motorcycle-robots, some of which evidently can have a certain level of sentience and can ‘bond’ with certain riders. It’s a bit of a mish-mash between a young girl’s coming-of-age story intertwined with a girl-and-her-mecha fantasy and a rebels-take-on-the-evil-government saga. (It seems that some of the top riders are female - both high-school aged rookies and slightly older virtuosos - not exactly Super Cub, but entertaining in its own way.) It’s a pretty decent action series - and I’m enjoying the ride. |

Combination of Denji being so locked out of society up until now that he's starved for any attention, and not being particularly bright. Actually refreshing in a strange way compared to other MCs coming off as being "genius level/nearly omniscient". There’s a lot of eye-rolling-worthy crap being tossed out for undiscerning anime watchers to glom onto.
For example, Crunchyroll is touting a quiz where you answer a bunch of questions after which it purports to compute a score and tell you which of the Chainsaw Man characters you are (most similar to), after which you’re supposed to post your reaction in a ‘comments’ section on their site. It’s lame. It’s brain dead. It’s not even remotely interesting (at least to me - maybe if you’re 8 or 9 years old your reaction would be different - but is Chainsaw Man really being aimed at elementary schoolers?). Yeah, I understand the general concepts behind ‘marketing’, but isn’t there (or shouldn’t there be) a prime marketing directive along the lines of “don’t be lame, don’t be unfunny”? It’s at https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-feature/2022/12/05-1/quiz-which-chainsaw-man-character-are-you if you’re looking to waste some time. That quiz is a follow-on from the “Can you earn the approval of Makima from Chainsaw Man?” quiz at https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-feature/2022/11/08/quiz-can-you-earn-the-approval-of-makima-from-chainsaw-man |
