One Piece: The Marineford Arc
After just finishing what most One Piece fans consider to be the best arc in the 1,100+ episode series, here are a few of my thoughts: - While I do consider it a top two arc, I still have the Enies Lobby Arc as #1. Admittedly, Nico Robin being my favorite character and Enies Lobby basically being her arc is a factor in that. Click To View Spoiler - One Piece is WAAAAY too spoilery with their episode titles. The episode where Ace dies is titled “Fire Fist Ace Dies on the Battlefield.” Thankfully, I learned a long time ago to avoid the titles. Still, I have no idea why they do that. - I definitely enjoyed the arc, but, at the same time, with the way Ace died it kinda felt, in a way, like a big waste of time. We follow Luffy for 70+ episodes as he overcomes impossible odds to rescue his brother, he actually pulls it off, but then his brother idiotically gets himself killed about 5 minutes later. It reminded me of this. - It was interesting to see the immediate aftermath of the battle and the world’s reaction. Especially to see the people eating up the World Government’s version of events and then to see their shock when they realize that reality doesn’t mesh with what they were told. - I could watch an entire spinoff about Zoro and Perona. - Boa Hancock had my favorite insult in the series so far with “you foolish, misshapen manchild. Your ignorance is an affront to my beauty!” Of course that was the dub. In the sub she said the much less impactful “you’re such a senseless man. You don’t know anything.” |

He gets no respect from most of his classmates and teachers - but he is driven to excel with his sword and his intelligence and perseverance, even though he has no magical abilities whatsoever. The artwork is lacking, and the plot seems to be larded with cliches, but there are at least a few novel elements, twists, and turns that I've glimpsed so far, and so I'm enjoying it despite its flaws. |

There seems to be something about that special Without them in-hand he seems to get his ass kicked. Also remembering that he was able to rely on his academic prowess, especially his knowledge of how the magic-less dwarves were able to prevail in their history-making battle - as well as his experience in the dungeons (but I don’t think he went into the dungeons unarmed). The plots and intrigue that are occurring in the background promise to continue to make things interesting - prophesies abound, with hidden actors pulling strings, and clearly ‘somebody’ knows ‘something’ that they’re not telling us, other than by dropping some occasional hints of an impending potentially historic and catastrophic battle. After all, nobody can see the real sky. The MC is not Harry Potter - or is he? |

Oh, FFS! Episode 3 of Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, the fucking dub, seems to be a flashback episode. So, instead of Japanese or English, the audio is Russian, with Japanese subtitles. Who the fuck thought THAT was a good idea?
So, now I have to find the sub, and hope they translated the Japanese subtitles. Good grief! |

Plus two seasons provided 37 episodes, which is nice. Definitely a required sub viewing though. |

I do not understand this thread. But I am living it right now, because my son has convinced me to take him to the anime convention in Washington, DC. Like me, the fine staff of the Marriott Marquis appears to have no idea what is going on, either.
While this is not my world, it is very clearly the one place all these people fit in. And it has been fun watching things like the dude with full angel wings try to fit his way into a crowded elevator filled with the inter-mingled scents of body odor and despair. Also, the hotel is packed to the rafters with a half dozen people per room, but the hotel bar is surprisingly empty. I guess bourbon really cuts into the cardboard sword budget. Anyways, the 15 or so pages I read of this thread have not really made anything clearer, but perhaps I will see some of you at the assorted screenings and panels. I will be the guy cos playing a confused middle-aged man at the bar, and you will know me by my ability to make sustained eye contact. |

When I was in college I got excited when I met other anime fans as I had been the only one I knew of and holy shit... what a fucking shit show that turned out to be. I don't know how or why but somehow it seemed to draw the worst, most immature, mentally unstable, unclean people I've encountered this side of dealing with meth heads and homeless back when I was in LE. I've been to a SINGLE anime convention and that was only because my niece begged me to take her.. it was once again full of those same people, there were literally signs up telling people to bathe and wear deodorant. This group here on ARFCOM is the only anime group I tend to vibe with, most of us seem pretty normal otherwise I try not to advertise my guilty pleasure in fear of getting lumped into that aforementioned shit show of fandom. As I mentioned in my post above I started watching anime on TV when I was a kid and it just clicked with me, I'm just a normal dude thou that likes guns, girls, guitars, cars and then anime. Hehehe there was literally a thing in the registration packet about the importance of personal hygiene.
I am not judging the consumption of anime as entertainment; while I am a bit to old to have it as a part of my childhood, my 14 year old loves it, and so must many 40 year olds by the look of things. I am also about two degrees of separation from the Amish in terms of cultural currency, so I am in no position to offer informed criticism on the medium at large. But I am totally in a position to make fun of the guy dressed as what appears to be Jesus with an Arby's logo over his head arguing with a 300 pounder with a green wig and samurai sword with the passionate intensity of a Glok vs 1911 debate. Tomorrow I am going to ask everyone what Star Wars character they are dressed as. |

I had the same impression of the average weeb/anime fan, when I was in college; socially awkward weirdos, with poor personal hygiene. That said, I’ve dated girls who were big on cosplay. Yes, they tend to be fun, quirky and kinky. One of them dragged me along to one of those comic con type things. I did actually see quite a fair percentage of women, and more than a few attractive ones (obviously, there were plenty of plain, and chunky folks, both male and female). |
