Fun fact - I won a $2,000 scholarship for a paper I wrote about Vanna White back in 1987.
A local car dealership held a scholarship contest every year open to all the surrounding towns. My senior year the topic of the contest was Man of the Year. I’d already been awarded a full academic scholarship to Boston University so wasn’t going to participate. I found out the morning the essay was due that our English teacher made them mandatory. I didn’t really care so quickly wrote a joke of an essay during lunch. For those too young to remember, there was a Vanna White craze in the late 80’s. She was on the cover of everything. I chose Pat Sajak as Man of the Year because he did all the work but Vanna got all the credit. I went on to describe all the skills Pat needed to host the show and keep it entertaining while all Vanna had to do was stand there turning boxes, but she was on the cover of every magazine and being interviewed on all the late night talk shows. It was all tongue in cheek, but pretty well written if you ask me. Lo and behold…I won! The next thing I know I’m in the Principal’s office getting berated for making a mockery of the scholarship and embarrassing my school. I turned down both scholarships and enlisted instead
