This is just a reminder that "They Shall Not Grow Old" is probably the best WWI documentary ever made and anyone who reads this reply should watch it.

That song was stuck in my head for a month after watching the documentary.

The German U-boat U-35 cruising in the Mediterranean, April 1917

SM U-35 was a German U 31-class U-boat which operated in the Mediterranean Sea during World War I. It ended up being the most successful U-boat participating in the war, sinking 220 merchant ships for a total of 505,121 gross register tons (GRT).

Her longest serving captain was Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière. Under his command, U-35 sank 191 ships, making him the most successful submarine commander in history.

I just came across photos of my grandfather who was either in WW-I and/or part of the US Punitive Expedition against Pancho Villa. I don't see any rank or other patches on his uniform. In the second photo there is an emblem of some sort on his campaign hat. I am trying to find the album these came from to see it there is anything written on the backs of the individual pics. If there are knowledgeable folks here that can shed some light on these, it would be greatly appreciated!

ETA1:

My dad told me that these photos were most likely taken in Arizona (Possibly before he shipped out?), if that helps any....

ETA2:

Additional pic from a book on my dad’s family history. It appears that my grandfather was in the 7th Cavalry during WW-I. The 7th was also part of the Mexico Punitive Expedition, so there is the possibility of him being a part of that. My grandfather later served in WW-II in the Navy.

Speaking of balloons, and since balloons are in the news, and since it is February 14, it is a strange coincidence that I reached into a box of family memorabilia today and pulled out a letter dated February 14, 1918 from a friend in the 2nd Balloon Battalion, AEF, to my grandmother.  104 years ago. Sorry, no pic. I will transcribe the germane part:

(Note:  "Went West" was the WWI equivalent of "Bought the Farm.")

"Got some bad news last night.  The first one of the bunch I came over with went West.  Leo was killed about two weeks ago.  He was up with a French Lieutenant and Fritz set their balloon on fire with a rocket from an aeroplane.  They jumped clear and their parachutes opened perfectly and the dirty hound in the Bosche plane turned his machine guns loose on their parachutes.  He missed the French observer and filled Leo full of holes...He married just before we left New York.  So it makes me feel rather low.  But "C'est le guerre," as our French friends say."

My great grandfather was a cartographer, and he somehow ended up with the final Order of Battle map of WW1 for the Western front.

My grandfather found it in a shoebox folded up tight as hell, and his wife "fixed" it with tape.

Only other copy I could find was unissued in the library of congress,  but the first couple of guys who I've shown it too said it was worth nothing, but they'd give me $100 for it.

I actually want to either sell or loan it to a museum, because I want others to see and enjoy it. Anyone know a guy? lol

Very cool.  But I see that it is a Classified Document, marked "Secret."  I'm sure the FBI will be by soon to pick it up and look for more!

Seriously, check with the Infantry Museum at Benning.  A few years ago they amped up their WWI collection:

There were a fair few light artillery pieces at the time.  Three or so dudes would carry that in pieces all the way up the mountain and then every one thereafter might bring two rounds for it.

Don't ever underestimate the ability of real first world war history to look like some sick fictional steampunk apocalypse.

I think they used pack mules too. Block and tackle as well. I enjoy the rabbit holes in these threads.
