Ain't no radio.  But I'll do progressive build pics if there's interest.

Got a lacquered tweed cabinet coming Thursday.  Yes I can build one myself, and have, but I don't have the equipment.

I built an overdrive/boost pedal.  I eyed the amp kits.

I got skeered.  Wound up with a Dual Rectifier instead.

have fun!

Definitely post some video when it's done in the music sub!

I've made plenty of eyelet boards, but always on G10, this is my first on fiberboard.  Easier for sure.

The second board goes behind the eyelet board as an insulator, to prevent shorts to the chassis.  G10 boards usually get standoffs instead.

I'm considering "potting" these in parafin wax, like Fender often did in the 70s amps.  This prevents absorbtion of moisture from humidity, which can make these fiberboards somewhat conductive and problematic.  It's a bit messier to work with, but the wax doesn't inhibit soldering.

I have this cool hand press for the eyelets:

All done with the boards!

That's probably all for tonight.

I've been building tons of pedals the last 5 years or so.  Very cheap compared to tube amps, usually under $35 in parts.  But my real love is tube amps.

I don't have any way to record video.

I bought this mini Crock Pot at a Goodwill for a couple bucks just for melting wax, for potting pickups and whatnot.  It takes a couple hours to melt, but it does a good job and doesn't overheat anything.

Not all melted, but close enough!

Dippin'.

A little too much wax, but I'll hit both boards with the heat gun to drip off the excess.

Board and output transformer installed in chassis.  The rest of the components will be added to the board later obviously.  I'm not usually a huge fan of Orange Drop caps in guitar amps, but these are NOS from the 70s and I figured I'd give them a try, very easy to change if I don't like them.

Sockets installed.  This OT has 4- and 8-ohm secondaries, so I added an impedance switch.  The internal 8" speaker will be 4 ohms like the originals, but it's nice to be able to run bigger cabs, and I plan to use this amp with my 8-ohm talk box.

I am deviating from the original circuit just a little.  Fender used 16/8/8µF filter caps, but I like 16/16/8µF, it thickens the tone just a tad.  I will also add a screen resistor, that should help the power tube last a little longer.

I don't like the on/off switch being attached to the volume pot, so I mount a separate switch in the fuse holder hole, then mount an internal fuse holder to the inside of the chassis.  I also use a 1A fuse instead of the 2A that Fender used, a little better protection but won't blow in normal operation.

I mentioned a few posts up that I'm going to install the On/Off switch in that hole.  If I had a way to do screen printing, I would add "Not 2 Amp" on the opposite side of the hole.

Just got the cab delivered a little while ago.  It looks perfect, better than I could do for sure.  The little baggie inside contains chassis bolts, wasn't expecting those, and they're the same style that Fender used.  A nice touch!

My shitty little digi-camera likes to change the tint of colors, it doesn't look quite as "school bus yellow" in reality.

Nice.  I get to work on one occasionally, some people here have heard it on recordings, unknowingly of course.

I've built one 5F1 before, in more "true" PTP style.  A buddy bought it from me, so this one is my replacement, and I'm going more traditional with the build style this time.  A few minor deviations for reduced noise.

Here's that other one, it wasn't 100% done yet, there's a 5AR4 rectum-fryer, it was on the variac:

Here with it's big brother, donor of spare blond tolex and grill cloth:

Who me?  No, I avoid kits because they usually include cheap parts.  But using a pre-made chassis and cabinet makes this build as easy as a kit.

I'm going to try the Jensen MOD in this one, I don't know if I will like it, but it was only about $25.  The last one I used a (reissue) C8R, those sound great after they break in, but they take a LONG time to break in!  Too much doping on the surround I think.

Did you make that chassis?  Nice looking build!

(Also...5Y3, not 5U4)

edit:  Just noticed the extra holes, so a re-purposed chassis?  Same with my bigger amp.

BLONDES are for Surf Music. I still have my original '63 Jaguar, original Blonde Bassman and reissue Blonde Reverb Tank from when I went through my heavy Surf Music phase.

My Brown Deluxe is my Blues Amp. I'm not sure why I bought my Tweed Champ, to be perfectly honest.

Sheeeeeit.  Crank a (properly biased w/ good tubes) 5F1 up to about 75%, and it is RAWK time baby!  No dirt pedals needed!

But crank it past 75%, and the little 8" speaker fizzes out, lol.
