My brother went to Appalachain State and had a roommate from England iirc. There is a tall mountain in Boone called Howard's Knob. Some developers were trying to buy it, and all around town were signs/tshirts/bumperstickers that said "Save Howard's Knob". Apparently across the pond knob is slang for dick. The roommate bought all he could so he could mail it home.

Can confirm all. In addition, NASA and the DOE put one of, if not the first, energy producing experimental windmills on Howard's Knob. Not only was the "whumping" audible for several miles, it made everyone's TV roll.
