At one point in my life, around jr high school age, I went to a school that was about 10% white and the rest was about an even mix of hispanic and black. If you were white you didn't go from class to class unless you were in a group of at least 10 other white kids or a group of hispanics. Even going with a teacher wasn't always safe as many of them would do a quick fade when the black kids showed up in a group. Most of the white kids were scared shitless of the blacks and soon learned to either avoid them like the plague or stay in a group of hispanics, who wouldn't put up with their shit. I was in that school for about 4 months and got short suspensioins twice for fighting, always with the black kids. I finally got suspended for the rest of the year even though the black kids started the fights and never got suspended or expelled themselves.  And this was back in the early 70's in California. Imagine how bad it must be now.

I went to private school up until 9th grade. My first year of public school was at a school with at least 75% black kids. My 6th grade class had 8 kids. My 9th grade class was like 300 something kids. Talk about a culture shock. We had redneck kids and skater kids for white people and they didn't mesh well with the majority black population. Lots of fights but the best were black on black girl fights that always resulted in tumbleweave in the hall

Tulsa has a school like that

Booker T Washington.
TPS puts its elite honors program school in the middle of the hood combining the honors program with the locals which to my knowledge are schooled in a different section of the building. everyone in town tries to downplay the hood and locals and only discusses the scholarship opportunities that come from there.

ITS STILL IN THE FUCKING HOOD..

my son was invited to shadow there and the family wanted to see what it was really like. so we decided to check it out to see if their PR was legit or it if it was questionable.

they escorted us in, passing thru metal detectors and 3 security officers. we dropped the boy off with his chaperones and by the time we had made it back to the truck in the parking lot- the school had issued a lock down due to a shooting/murder across the street.

when we picked him up at 3PM, I asked him what his day was like.

he said "its a prison system, dad...cell block C"
now granted them kid is finishing 8th grade and he later told he it was "liberals trying to prove how liberal they were by sending their kids for a free education that is slightly better than their regular public schools and alot less than the private ones I've gone too" he also said "its for parents to feel good about trying to send their kids to a better school without spending any money"

that was our public school experiment.

the only day K-12 that my son ever entered a Public School building.

Nope.

"This school is rated below average in school quality compared to other schools in South Carolina. Students here have below average college readiness measures, this school has below average results in how well it's serving disadvantaged students, and students perform below average on state tests."

"This school is far below the state average in key measures of college and career readiness.

(Remember: high graduation rates don't mean much if students are graduating without the coursework and test scores they need to succeed.)"

"Test scores at this school fall far below the state average. This suggests that students at this school are likely not performing at grade level."

Lived in a 99% white suburb and school was 5 minutes away. Got hit with a federal desegrgation order. School turned into 45 minutes away on the bus and 90% black. Parents house becamse instantly almost worthless. Saw a 5th grader beat a teacher with a desk and broke her arm. Went to private school the next year that my parents helped build and start. Private shools were too backed up to get into the first year. Deseg order only lasted 35 years.
The majority black school I got bussed too wasn't even urban, very rural and they didn't want us there either. They changed the name like that was going to help. School that Doug Williams the quarterback had went to. NAACP sued on the behalf of those in the school. Soon as the Department of Education became a thing it was only a matter of time, 2 years afterwards.

The high school I went to was 50/50. Engineering magnet school, public school drawing from the same area the one I mentioned above all you had to do was apply and have semi decent grades. Never once saw a fight with 1200 students there. Never even saw a pushing contest. No sport teams. Guess it was a matter of students that were motivated to be there (or their parents were motivated for them to be there) compared to just trash.

There was a pretty big drug problem but nobody pushed it. Some were just really bored.

Yup.

That said where I grew up was a really good example of a class/culture being destroyed by the need of inclusion and accusations of racism in the 1970s resulting in political leadership and many of the community leadership doing everything in their power to avoid that label and most importantly to remain in power.  That meant destroying traditions and surrendering to narratives while the main tax paying residents lost their ass with a manufacturing base that was being cut out from under itself.

Bottom line, it's easier to become a lower class than move up and when labor becomes ignorantly cheap and narratives become more important than maintaining culture you get these kinds of things.  Accept this separate culture or else you're a racist.

I don't, middle and high school kids never have money and are always trying to figure out ways to break shit and get stuff like free soda. I went to a pretty damn wealthy school and we we had our coke machine removed for several months after someone vandalized it.

Our Parish may have settled a 50 year old desegregation case.
The race baiters have made bank off the litigation.
The schools suck, the school board suck and we home school.
When the black kids started getting shipped to the rural schools, mayhem ensued.
Fights, drugs, thefts. They starting having to have crazy security at games where there was never a need before.
Team locker rooms ransacked during games...
I have black friends. They come to my house and I spend time with them away from there and work.
It's not fair to either side. The individuals shipped around the parish don't want to be, but neither has a say.
"The Tangipahoa Parish School System headquarters. A 50-year battle to desegregate Tangipahoa Parish schools may have come to an end. U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle signed Document 1264..."

They do it to protect the kids from themselves.  Every year a handful of folks get crushed to death trying to get a free soda out of them.  The cages make them harder to tip.

I was aware of gang initiations held in the rest rooms.

LOL ... bullshit ..... I'll give you my cousin's email that grew up in Durham NC and was a part of their bussing program. His dad, my uncle, is rich as fuck.  Their neighborhood had their own horse stables, a retired (and very famous) Bball player lives (or lived) in the neighborhood to give you an idea.  But starting his 10th grade year (might have been freshman year) his name was on the list the would be bussed to the other side of town, while some of those kids were bussed to the school he should have been going to.  Yeah it was great for him, no problems what so ever

BTDT. Henry Ford High School, Detroit. 1976-78

~1500 students. Thirty or forty of us were white. They kept us mostly in the same classes so that we travelled together in a pack

Got robbed daily, had knives waved in my face regularly. Had to display your school photo ID at all times, and just to get in the building. Open drug dealing in the hallways, trash cans lit on fire. It was so overcrowded we only went half a day.

Got so hardened that the aspiring rapper in front of me in the cafeteria line slipped and fell and his arm went through the stainless steel tray rail, snapped his upper arm like a twig while he flopped around like a fish begging for help. I went around him and paid for my lunch then went to eat. My last weeks there I carried a ball-peen hammer in my book bag.

Then we moved to the exurbs - Brighton. Thought I had died and gone to heaven.

ETA: What made the culture shock worse was that I went from middle school in Newport Beach, CA (near the Back Bay) to Detroit when I went to live with my mother and step-father.

In MD, the magnet schools are always in the ghetto because test scores count for the campus, not the building. So they build an extra floor or an extra building and declare that the magnet school but it counts as part of the ghetto school for test scores. The two populations have separate lunch, gym, art, etc classes. If you live in the school's normal attendance area, you would interact with the rest of the student population on the bus and that's it, out-of-area kids have separate bussing arrangements, such as free busses from the local high school if the parents get the students there in time each morning, or more liberal parking pass policies.

Went to a high school in Memphis for a couple of years ('82-84) that was about 50/50 white and black.  Not a bad school, but things were rowdy between the races.  Had some black guys that had a beef against me and they started a fight one day and I ended up chasing down one of the guys and punched and locker-slammed him outside the vice-principals office.  Got a 3-day suspension, but the other kid told his family that I was trying to kill him and "nobody did anything".  Anyway, the NAACP started picketing the school, we started getting death threats on the phone all night long, and we almost had to move.  Mom was pissed.  I transferred to a private school the next year.

Funny. I grew up in Southern Missouri where most schools were all white and very poor. We didn't have those kinds of problems regularly as the all black schools. Certainly didn't have metal detectors at entrances or cages around vending machines. So I don't think it's strictly a money issue. And yet these are areas where drugs are a big problem. Still, gangs and violence in the school weren't an issue.

I moved from Plano, Tx (one of the richest ISD's in the nation) to Alpharetta, GA that was in the midst of forced bussing/desegregation.
It wasn't as bad as some of the schools and still pretty suburban but I vividly remember some of the fights that occurred that left blood smeared on the ground.
and the constant bullying from the black kids on the bus to the white kids.
Being told as a kid that racism is only done by white people and what I was seeing was just kids being kids let me know at a young age that this country is screwed

I went to a middle school that was probably around 50% black.

It sssuuuccckkeeeddd. But honestly I had more issues with white and Hispanic kids than I did black kids.

I had a gun pointed in my face, there were gangs, constant fights. Two black girls started fighting in one of my classes and one started swinging a stool and hit the teacher, the teacher ended up going to the hospital. There were multiple fights each day, one time I couldn’t get to my locker because there was a fight and one of them had a gun.

Once I was sucker punched in the face in the middle of class. I go to the principles office and they are asking me about it, like looking at my face and how it’s pink from where I was punched and there are some black kids in there and one pushes their fingers into my face and says how I turn pink easily and that’s why my face is red, so I must not have been punched that hard. Like WTF! I am punched in the middle of class and the principle is listening to some kids that were not even there poke my face and tell me how I turn pink easily.

That whole time was the absolute most infuriating experience of my life. We literally had classes like history, where the teacher said the class didn’t behave so they couldn’t teach anything. We had zero tests, zero assignments, nothing. So what are people going to do when you don’t give them anything to do? They f{%}^#ing act up, throw things, taught each other, steal things, and so on.

Edit to add: The most idiotic thing in the school was people would come up to you, pull their fist back preparing to punch you and go “say I won’t”. If you say “you won’t” they would punch you.

Edit 2: Starting out in 7th grade there was a girl who was probably 8 months pregnant.

Also had a bunch of “kids” that must have been held back multiple years. I wouldn’t be surprised if half kids in the school were just getting moved on to the next grade after they failed so many times. So it’s not just “school yard bullies” these are actual gang members that have 5 years on me.

I worked around NYC schools in neighborhoods all over NYC for years and I'm sooooo glad my parents got me out of there when I was in the 6th grade. Some schools in ethnic areas ,the kids and staff were animals.
