Got this craftsman tool cart and chest today at a yard sale for $15. The whole cart drawers don't want to open. there is clearly treasure in them.
From what I can tell there's only the lock at the bottom, and that's not locked. What do I need to do to open this up without destroying everything? Attached File Attached File |

EtAApparently having only 2 letters in a post is not allowed. Would not let me post before hyphenating. |

I could open that with acouple paper clips. Other than that call craftsman and give them the number on the lock cylinder face. They should be able to send a new set of keys.
|
|
reach through the bottom opening and you should find the lock rod that secures the drawers.
Push it up and you should be able to pull the drawers open one at a time. |
|
No idea but that garage door is not completely pushed in and that's the linkage that releases the drawers.

That bottom flap has to be pushed all the way in to disengage the bar that keeps the drawers from opening. It flips up, pushes in then stops. Keep pushing it backwards, it should disengage the lock. Mine takes a little shove to work. Also make sure the drawers are pushed all the way in first. |

If pushing the lower door all the way in doesn't work you will have to get your head inside to check for something lamming the mechanism.
In my experience it has always been a plastic bag that gets pushed over the back of the drawer and into the mechanism. . |

Drawers opened right up to reveal the treasures! Now how do I get the drawers out of the smaller top thing? I wanna clean them Pics of the contents or do I have to wait for page 2? |

I don’t think that lock locks the drawers....it looks like it locks the flat bar that slides in front of the drawers. Are there slots for a bar in front of the drawers?

TBH, I have no idea how to get the drawers out. Never had any success in getting them out. ETA: In case you are curious, that box is ~30 years old and I believe it was American made. I got mine in 91-92 (first tool box) and have outgrown it a few times now. In 1990s dollars the top/bottom cost more then the much larger HF box next to it did in 2010 or so, Attached File |

There are little metal clasps on the drawer rails, either push them down, pull the up, or pop them out.
I forget exactly how these ones come out; but one of those 3 will work. |
|
Carefully pry the clip stop away from the sliders to remove the drawers.

I still haven't told mom, or sis, why I can open dad's old toolbox, and they can't. |

If you push the hinged door on lower cart in,towards back it unlocks the drawers.Lift it up and push in hard.
The top grab lock cylinder with channel locks and turn it,complete cylinder will turn unlocking to lid, unlocking drawers. |

I love the internet
you guys got me to completely take this apart, all the drawers out, and getting cleaned up as we speak! I was going to buy the $500 set of chinese harbor freight tool bench later this month. But now I'm breathing live back into a 1994 made in the USA with USA steel work bench |
|
I’ve got exactly that set, purchased in the mid 90s. The tomcat that lived across the street got into my garage and pissed in the bottom part lifting some of the paint. Asshole.
|
|
Usually I'll get a wrench standing up of something to prevent the drawer from opening, I just jiggle it around usually that solves the issue.

Is anyone else not impressed that this is a time capsule to 1989 but with virtually no mouse shit?

I can’t see the back but if the hinge has a pin you could drive it out . Also the lock could have a key number on it . Grinder or sawzall .
|
|
Nice. I'm afraid I'm about to buy another roll around cabinet to redistribute the stuff I removed from drawers that jammed a couple of weeks back.
|
|
You can pry the top open. It will bend the lid's locking tab.
But it can be bent back when it is opened. The drawers are locked by the rear sliding tabs, when the lid is opened. We've had to do it at work a few times. |
