Thanks,

Here is actual bullet picture of that .500S&W Magnum at work.

Funny thing is that we shot these ones while sitting in a chair. You can see back rest in the picture. Would you like to guess how it feels like to shoot this beast and not being able to make steady stand with your legs ?

Not test without a story so something here:

Long live this thread!

I've always wondered about the particle cloud that often precedes the projectile.  Would that be residue from previous shots being ejected ahead of the bullet?

I'd guess most of it is from shot itself. High pressure released when bullet exits is pushing cloud past the bullet. For a moment that gas is much faster than bullet.

I have something different for you for a change. More guns coming later though.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm happy to present you next dimension of Herra Kuulapaa High speed ballistics photography. Stereopairs aka 3D:

This way you can really experience the complexity of the images!

Viewing instructions and bigger images:

Move your chair little bit further away if it feels hard or your eyes hurt. It's worth it though!

Enjoy mates

Can you get the 3D effect out of these?

You better train because these pics give you so much better view to what's actually happening in there.

Awesome work.

I did some of this in HS 30years ago where a drop of milk would trigger the flash.

My primitive experience helps me appreciate just how awesome your work is.

Ever do a shotgun?

Thanks :)

We are planning to do shotgun but due to indoor gun range setup it's slightly dangerous. Problem is that there are thick rubber curtains in front of bullet trap and small shotgun shots are not able to penetrate them - curtains are bouncing some of the shots back to us. We can of course shield ourselves but we have nowadays so much equipment there that I fear for them. Shotguns are on list though :)

Time to get back to .45ACP

Due to unfortunate eye injuries some people have I've been asked to keep also 2D picture included when posting 3D stuff. This is more than fair request.

http://kuulapaa.com/Highspeed3D/SW_N_2D_800.jpg

And also 3D to visualize those structures:
http://kuulapaa.com/Highspeed3D/SW_N_3D_1200.jpg

I'd like to ask you to compare 2D and 3D images. You can get so much more info out of the stereo pair. For example that round flame structure is actually behind the barrel line and not above like it appears to be in 2D image.

Very interesting thread.  This appears to answer a long standing question I've had.  It appears that in all pictures, the bullet is well clear of the barrel before there is any significant recoil.  I would be really interested in rifle pictures with a ruler placed behind the barrel so displacement can be seen easily.
