I have been struggling with sloppy accuracy in my M9A4, and I tracked it down to a sighting issue.  Aligning a laser sight with the dot, then locking the slide back and dropping the slide with the slide release would result in misaligned dots.  I tried this with 2 different laser sights.

I've probably spent $100 in ammunition chasing this stupid problem down.

After removing the RDS and the optic adapter plate, I discovered that the adapter plate is warped by holding it against a metal ruler.  It has an almost imperceptible hump in the middle that prevents the optic from seating flat on the plate. I think these were heat treated after machining and they weren't properly stress relieved or were quenched improperly.

Anyhow since I have 2 RDO models, I had bought a second optics mount plate and stuck it in a drawer. It's warped too.

My 80X, totally different gun, had a warped plate as well.  It was pretty thin and I was able to bend it straight in my vise.  These 92 plates are 3X as thick and the vise couldn't touch it.

So Beretta and MGW are out of stock on the plates, of course, because Beretta is running a great sale with free shipping right now and anything you actually need is out of stock.

So I am pretty much out of options.  If it wasn't for the little nubs for the red dot, I could just lap it flat by hand on a glass plate with some wet or dry sandpaper.  But those nubs would interfere.

In short, as much as I like Beretta's 92 series design, their execution is dog shit, and they don't care.  I guess for now I am going to have to get on their waiting list and buy another one at full price plus shipping when they stock them some time after the sale is over.

This shouldn't be warped.  2 of them shouldnt be warped.  2 of them plus the 80X version for a total of 3 shouldn't be warped.

Before you blame the shooter, I shot this 10 shot group with a .22 pistol on the same target as the 9mm just to make sure that it WASN'T me.  I'd be happy with a 2 inch 9mm group at 25 yards.  I'd be happy with a 3 inch group.  But this Beretta was shooting 6.5 inch groups at its worst.

I tried different barrels, different ammo weights, and re-mounting the sight over 4 range trips to track it down.  You can read about it in this thread if you're interested.

https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_5_4/218130_Handgun-accuracy-problem-.html

This bottom target is what you get with Beretta's warped optics plate.

Looking at the underside of the plate, you can see further evidence of the warping.  These shiny spots where it was making partial contact with the slide cuts on the outer edges, but no contact toward the middle of the plate.  This is the underside of the plate so instead of a hump, it has a dip in the middle.

If you're reading this, Beretta, you make it real hard to be a loyal customer. And if you're not reading this, that's just another clue that you don't care.

Heres a shot showing the front of the sight doesn't sit flush because of the bend in the plate.  You can see a lot of light right under the + button.

And the bow underneath it.

I ordered a plate from DLah Designs for my new M9A4 because I couldn't find an actual Beretta plate in stock anywhere.  I read some decent reviews for that company but who knows.

I have one of his medium plates coming for a vortex defender st to go on my 92xi. Just got the shipping notice for it today in fact.

I got a gold finished plate for my tan 80X and it's a little piece of sculpted art. Titanium. For a tan Vortex Defender ST, DPP footprint.

This looks like a good company. And I'd be good with titanium.  I didn't see any options for the 92 series RDO guns though.

Iirc the 80x and 92 share the same page. Select from the drop down window. The pics of the 92 show the decocker on the frame. The decocker on the 80x pics show on the slide. Not sure if that helps anything for you.

I can definitely recommend the Dlah plates.  Have several including for my A4 and two 80x's.  Pretty sure he's mostly a one man show and makes the different plates in batches so it can take some time to get em shipped but well worth it.

Yes, the 92 selection from that menu really is 92 RDO. He says it's a FAQ, but he still won't fix it.
I ordered one, and it really is well finished. But...

1) It took 100+ days for it to ship, when it was marked "in stock". Communication with this guy is... at his whim.
2) It fits the Trijicon RMR *exactly*, to the point it didn't fit the PA RMR footprint sight I was using, because there was no .002 radiused front edge on the PA sight, so it would snuggle into the recess. A file took care of that (on the sight), but  I see you have an OLight, so you might need to make a similar adjustment. Or not.
3) I ended up putting it in the "next Beretta I buy" parts box, and going back to my DLah plate.
It takes away some of the visual impact when you can't see it.

Agreed with your take. I have a plate that doesn’t allow the firing pin block to fully raise meaning the pistol doesn’t function with the plate on. I’ve had better success with Dlah from a service, lead time, and communication standpoint.

My experience was the opposite with https://eleven71design.com/shop/p/beretta-80x-cheetah

I emailed about the plate and got a response less than a week later. Got the plate in about two weeks. When I got it and confirmed how well it fit my 80X, I bought a CCW for it (RMSc vs DPP).

I had initially bought an ST for my 80X but discovered it'd hang over the edges more than the CCW, so I ordered a CCW for the plate. Still have  the ST in a box. The  Eleven71 is $. But with the way it matches the curves of the 92/80X, plus the Ti and the fit, I couldn't be more impressed.

The Dlah flush mount requires changing the firing pin safety block?

I don't see anything about that on the website.

The EGW mounts don't use the optics cut in the slide at all.  You drive out the rear sight and install their dovetail block, then the plate mounts to the block in the rear sight dovetail.  They are a work-around for folks to mount optics without getting a slide cut.

Got the plate in from DLah Designs, it looks good.  But while waiting on it I went with a different optic.  Ordered the ACRO plate from Beretta and put a Steiner MPS on it since I could find one in FDE.  The Beretta ACRO plate is done well, it's straight/flat as I would expect.

It's called the Beretta "RDO" cut.  Most of the plates I've seen for it actually refer to the "92X RDO".

I think possibly the exta thickness from the dovetail probably helps keep them from warping when heat treating.

Thanks! Looking at some options like Dlah, the plate doesn't seem to engage into the cuts in the slide. Do I have that right? Do the factory blocks just stay in place?

Secondly, they're "in the white." Does anybody make one that's finished? Disregard, I see the option for finished plates.

The dlah plates sure look nice but there are numerous reports from competition shooters of not holding zero in the long term.  IDK why they don't just make them out of steel, probably just a limitation of his equipment.  Aluminum seems like it needs a lot more thread engagement than the dlah plate offers.

I broke down and ordered a Dlah.  Got tired of waiting for Beretta, though rumor has it they will re-stock some time in April.  I'll get one of their new ones as well just to see if there are any differences.  At this point I've been so screwed out of money on their shitty 1st gen OEM plates, another $50 give or take won't make a difference.

I'll take measurements with calipers and update the thread with any differences between the old and new Beretta plates.

I agree Dlah should be using steel but I think it's probably what an earlier post said, their machines aren't set up for it.

Titanium is harder to machine especially with small complex cuts.

If you had a desktop hobby cnc you could probably reproduce the Dlah plate for next to nothing.  You need an actual fullsize cnc to work with titanium.

Not trying to argue with you, it just is what it is.  I have had both and in my opinion the Eleven71 is a superior product and I am personally willing to spend the extra money.  YMMV

I'm not sure how $127 for a titanium plate is out of line.

FCD steel plates are $80 to $120, depending on platform.
Dlah aluminum plates are $68 to $155, depending on platform and finish.
Arise aluminum(?) plates are $90 to $120 depending on platform and model.

Granted, I would much prefer FCD to come out with a plate, but until that happens, looks like I'm going with an Eleven71 plate.

Yeah it just seems really high for the small amout of material you get, and for the fact that it's a single piece with no moving parts.

Here's a titanium watch band with a bunch of moving parts, more material (probably more waste material too) and a hell of a lot more machining, plus assembly operations as well for the same $127.00

https://www.avontic.com/products/garminguard-titanium-elite-band-precision-crafted-for-fenix-8-amoled

Here's a made in USA titanium carabiner that has a moving part and requires an assembly step.  The website states they are CNC machined here in the US and even has some pics of the production line. $27.99. That's $27.99, not $127.99.

https://www.trayvax.com/products/trayvax-carabiner

So a similar sized part using similar manufacturing processes, (and some extra assembly steps) cost a fraction of the optics plate.  I know, there's always a reason why it has to cost what it does and it's never a 300%+ profit margin.

I'm sure the next excuse reason for the high price will be "economies of scale".

I don't care why they charge so much, really.  It just doesn't seem like a good value to me for the reasons stated.  The gun accessory market has tons of stuff like this that you don't really see in other product categories for some reason.

In any case, let's try to avoid topic drift as I plan to update this thread with measurements and fit quality when the Dlah plate arrives and when I am able to get a version 2 Beretta plate.

Now let's take that chain of logic and push it one step further:

Apparently they don't make simple aluminum carabiners in the USA, but you can get this one here for $10.99 and it is from a well known and respected brand
https://www.rei.com/product/169034/black-diamond-litewire-carabiner

I think that should pretty well address your allegations of overcharging based on raw materials cost.
At the end of the day, cost is just cost, the important thing should be to get the best product at the most reasonable cost, not just the lowest cost.

FYI, if you are set on an aluminum plate, Tanner machine on ebay has the exact same plate as the Dlah mid-mount for almost half the price, and it already comes anodized without having to pay extra.  They are also made in the USA.

Seems like if you care about being ripped off and questionable profit margins, Dlah would be the last choice.  YMMV

I wasn't aware of the Tanner plates.  This is the first time I've heard them mentioned anywhere.

As for the watch band comparison, it isn't about material cost, it's about manufacturing complexity using the same material.  In my example we have a much more complex item with multiple moving parts that had to be assembled, and it's made of the same material and offered at the same price as one single part with no assembly.

The REI carabiners are forged, not machined (they have to be in order to hold the loads they are designed for), and aren't really a good comparison because it's a completely different manufacturing process. Forging is cheaper than machining at commercial volumes and reduces material waste because you aren't cutting a ton of it away and discarding it.

Wasn't my intent to thread drift, just point out that other manufacturers sold single pieces of material with no moving parts for just as much as and more than what Eleven71 was asking.

So is there any consensus here about good plates?

My jist of this thread is:

Aluminum plates won't hold zero and most are overpriced

Ti plates are overpriced (and with Eleven71 apparently you lose the rear sight)

Beretta plates have poor QC and sit too high anyway

So having LTT machine the slide and install their parts it is the only good option?

I don’t have a dog in this fight as I’m not trying to put a dot on a Beretta. But titanium is a stupid material for an optic mount to go out of your way and pay more for. Considering we’re talking about optic mounts, you want strength and don’t want flex… right?

Something like 17-4 H900 stainless is relatively cheap, can be bought and machined in prehard condition (meaning no post machining heat treatment or warpage), is 15-20% stronger than Gr5 Ti with almost 200% more stiffness (ie: deflection under load), and is a dream to fabricate & machine.

In fact, many hardenable stainless and carbon steel alloys (that are much cheaper than Ti) are going to be MUCH stiffer than Ti and in the same ballpark for UTS, proof, and shear strengths.  Even steels and stainlesses that are weaker than titaniums and aluminums will still be exceptionally stiffer. Steels are nice like that.

As a mechanical designer of ~20 years,
I’d go with 7075-T6 with thread inserts if I was concerned about weight or some sort of hardened steel/stainless if I wanted to prioritize stiffness & strength…. or titanium if I wanted to maximize the lightening of wallets.

What you are looking at on the Eleven71 website is a Cheetah.  The rearsight on the Cheetah is part of the OEM plate.  If you remove the OEM plate, you lose the rear sight.

Thank you for this info.

I agree. Steel seems like the logical choice.

Beretta is supposed to re-stock in April.  We are halfway through April and I am interested to see if their new plates are any better than the first production runs.

I chatted with Beretta customer service a while back and they made a tacit admission that they knew something was wrong with the plates.

Something to the effect of "Yeah all those issues have been fixed in the new ones".

I've got a Dlah ordered so hopefully it holds up in spite of being aluminum.  But the gun has other problems contributing to poor accuracy and I think I'm going to put the new optics plate on a different gun to eliminate those factors when I go sight it in and shoot some groups.

Is there another option? If you go to "Shop", "Beretta", select "92". This the only plate I see on their site for the Beretta 92.

They show a 92G with no rear sight in the pictures and say this on the page (So I guess I'd need something custom made?):

"Due to the design of the Optic Cuts, it is difficult to incorporate an Iron Sight. Please contact me if you must have an iron sight."

I guess I don't know then.  The one gun was a Cheetah, but then going back and looking at the pictures on the website, I saw that he had an LTT gun also in there.  If it's an LTT optic cut gun, doesn't LTT also remove the rear sight?

The drop down menu under "model" give you the option of a 80x, 92, and LTT cut.  I didn't see the comment about the difficulty in incorporating an iron sight until you pointed it out, but I think that might have to do with including an iron sight on the plate itself.  I only say that because when I went to his IG page, I found these pictures...

Yeah, there are clearly rear sights in those IG pictures.

He does say contact him if a rear sight is needed. Maybe there are some caveats he wants to make clear, to try and avoid bad reviews.
