Has the SIG Mosquirto been improved to where it's actually worth buying?

Seems to be about the same risk as buying a P22... Only you pay more for the Sig.

It really is a shame, because I wanted one pretty badly even before they came out.
I saw some pics and a review of the pistol on the SigForum before it was released IIRC.

HECK YES.

I've put alot of rounds through my mosquito, and I've read and heard positive feedback on around 25 mosquitoes over the last month, and I'm happy to say that everyone has had near flawless results with the new mosquitoes.

I'm not sure about people with older models, but everyone I know who purchased within the last 2 months, has had GREAT luck with theirs.

I've owned 3 P22's and I'll never own another.

I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I knew I could return it if it didn't function properly. Looks like a great little pistol, but there are just too many unfavorable reports around for me to risk it.

As far as I know, SIG has fixed every old mosquito returned for repair without question.

(Do you know of a story related to a Mosquito where SIG didn't fix it?)

I haven't actually followed any of the warranty work stories. Just some of the repetitive ones that led up to the need for warranty work.

What are they doing different on the new ones, or, what exactly was the problem in the first place? Is there a serial number or other marking to watch for when buying, to avoid getting a new-but-old-stock edition?

The Mosquitoes have had the tolerances changed according to SIG, the feedramp has been improved and the springs have changed. (the older Mosquitoes have solid springs, and the newer guns have a small end on one side. -- small goes closest to the trigger, big toward the end of the barrel.)

All of the Mosquitoes I've seen (in every configuration) have been "AO" serial numbered weapons.

It is hard to tell on what date things started to change, but the most recent serial numbers coming out of SIG are the AO55-60K range.

Just to place a time line on things:

AO33000 were coming out as early as Sept 2006.
AO35000 were seen around July 2007, but MANY are still leaving the factory.
AO44000 were seen around Sept 2007
AO55000 Are being seen NOW.
AO60000 Are being seen NOW.

Sports, TB's, B's, TT's and RTT's all fall into the same serial number ranges.

I've seen Sports in the AO55000 Range, and seen a Threaded Barrel model only a dozen serial numbers off.

Basically, Ask the dealer how long he's had the weapon in stock for, and he should be able to tell you if the weapon was sitting for a few months.

I'd probably stick to the 44-55K Serial number ranges for safety, but like I said previously, SIG is still pumping out Two Tones and Reverse Two Tones in the 35K serial ranges, and those weapons work well according to customers. (perhaps they've had work done)

In my honest, 100% out in the open opinion. I would probably only stay away from previously owned, possibly messed with, used Mosquitoes in the SUB 33K Ranges.

Yes, I've spent ALOT of time researching and playing with Mosquitoes. (think of them as my little pet project this year)

I used to be a Die-Hard P22 Fan, but after having one of each generation of those, I gave up and walked away. (First Gen had slide chipping, Second Gen  had FTE, Third Gen worked, but was horribly inaccurate.)

Thanks for the great post Jason Very informative!

Hmmm... now you have me thinking it's safe to get one.

Would you mind describing the differences between the, "Sports, TB's, B's, TT's and RTT's", assuming these are model designations? (I think I get the last two acronyms, but don't know the others)

Sport
Threaded Barrel
Two Tone
Reverse Two Tone
Blue
(There WAS a green frame, but its not offered anymore)

OH! I nearly forgot to add this:

SIG also claims that the longer barrels on the TB and Sport Models cause more back pressure and help to cycle the weapon. (I guess it makes sense)

If you are looking for a shooter, checkout the Sport model as it has the longer sight radius and the front sight is actually on the fixed comp instead of the moving slide.

If you are thinking more of a tactical style gun, the TB has the "cool factor" when you add a suppressor.

I bought one of the TB models when they first came out and have never had problems.  Gun is run 99.5% of the time with an Outback II and I have roughly 10k rounds through it.  It is my primary range gun since it's so fun and inexpensive to shoot.

Buy with confidence.

So I guess things have changed with the SigMos and we've all been touting the same old lines?

Maybe I should start parroting what JCUS said about the S/N range and see if we can't get any guineas to buy a few... Hopefully they'll report good things.

If not, I may end up with one soon enough and I'll post an AAR.

Now I need to reconsider the Pac-Lite upper and look into the Mosquito again. Would make a nice platform for the AAC Pilot.

That may very well be the case. If so, I'm gonna feel a little silly for dismissing them here on the forum, and to a few friends locally.

The popular opinion seemed overwhelming, so I thought avoiding them was wise.

Maybe it's kinda like the crowd who wont own a Ruger because of the rumors of 'how difficult they are to field strip'? (tying shoes is far more difficult to learn IMO)

I ordered one yesterday, so my brutally honest AAR is coming soon.

I just bought one from Jason and I've put 250rds through it with all sorts of ammo, golden bullets actually suprised me!  CCI minis and Stingers are good too but cost a little more.
I also have the P22 and have only had a few problems in the begining but as far as accuracy between them my vote is for the Sig!

Good luck with your new pistol!

I just put another 50rnds through mine today...(5 mags) no issues this time with the Subsonic Agulas. (they have been the ONLY touchy ammo for me so far.)

I'm planning on picking up a few bricks of different bulk ammo (from Walmart, Bi-mart and Sportsmans) and doing a massive shoot in one day to test how many rounds I can put through it before getting gunked too badly.

Should be a fun day!

Very preliminary New Sig Mosquito range report. (partially because I just got it this afternoon, and partially because I'm pretty sure I picked up the flu a few hours before that) More details to come soon.

Just honest opinions. No polish, no sugar coating, no royalty checks from Sig, no bashing.

Many thanks to JC Weaponry for the great price and speedy order. Very professional and friendly outfit.

First impressions of the Mosquito, the good;

Balance is pretty good. Glad I chose the Sport model, and fear the other models would have been a bit shaky in my hands.

Grip is exceptionally comfortable. Fits my somewhat larger hands very well, but should also work well for smaller hands too.

Slide release is positioned better than any .22 pistol I'm familiar with. Very natural and well thought out. (my favorite feature so far)

The double action aspect is new to me, since my background is primarily with target pistols, but I like the idea a lot. A second chance for those rounds that don't go off.... just squeeze the trigger again. I think that'll come in handy, knowing how all .22LR ammo can be stubborn sometimes. (regarding the Rugers, Brownings, S&Ws and such, those misfires usually do go off the second time around, if you take the time to reload them in to the mag and give them another strike. I know many rimfire auto shooters do not bother with that though.)

The single action trigger is crisp and light enough to be used for all but serious target work. Take-up is long and a bit gritty, but nothing that would cause a shooter to complain IMO. I was pleasantly surprised, and see no need to do anything to it for field use. (I probably will still look in to the trigger pull, if it ends up being a favorite down the road, since I'm a genuine trigger snob)

Finish and craftsmanship all appear to be as they should be. No cheap feel, no gimmicks, no space age ergonomics. It feels like a real tool, ready for serious field use. I like it.

The not so good;

Double action trigger pull is very heavy and long. Not ridiculous, but not desirable either.

Magazine is a bit awkward to load. The button is on the opposite side from Ruger and Browning. I'll look soon to see if it can be be reversed. My thumb is a bit sore from loading, since I used the wrong side out of habit. The button is also a little on the small side for my preference. (I have the exact same complaints about S&W Model 41/2206/422/622/etc. magazines.... probably just more used to the others)

*

The rest will have to come when I've had time to shoot it in the daylight. Tonight, I was only able to test fire, since I really couldn't see well enough to make use of the sights, or see the bullet impacts very well. (shooting off the back porch, in to a sand bank)

I did nothing to the pistol before firing it, except for wiping off the excess oil from the outside of the pistol.

I fired 100 rounds of CCI Mini Mags, round nose, over the course of about 10 minutes. The pics below were taken just before shooting. (It looks daylight, but that's thanks to software. It was getting pretty dark out)

Round #27 did not fire. I pulled the trigger again, and it did.

Round #90 mis-fed. (last round in the magazine, appears to have tipped up too far)

That's a 98% track record so far. Much more testing to come.

Pics taken with my 228, for size/dimension comparision.

Well, a Mosquito followed me home from the gun show today.  I decided I wanted a .22 pistol, but previously dismissed the Mosquito due to price and the problems I read about online.  I had pretty much decided on a Buckmark.
BUT, lo and behold, what did I find?  A NIB plain jane Mosquito for $269 plus tax.  I just couldn't resist.  Can't wait to try her out.
Oh yeah, the serial number is in the A061XXX range.  Hopefully it won't have any problems.

Field strip it and lube it up right out of the box.(Sig BARELY lubes it from the factory)

Most problems occur when fired straight out of the box.

Use CCI Mini Mags for the first 500 rounds.
I like federal bulk pack or Federal American Eagle.

Mine didn't like Remington bulk pack.

I got a few minutes free today, and swapped out the front sight with the taller/tallest one since it was hitting high with CCI Mini Mags.

100 more rounds fired.

Accuracy is good and it is hitting on target now. I shot offhand at distances 40-140 yards, and it appears to be sighted in as my other pistols are. (I'll shoot some groups on paper from a rest at shorter distances soon). This was a relief for me, since I really didn't have a back-up plan if the taller front sight didn't fix the problem.

The only failure was on round (1)93, when the slide didn't close all the way, preventing it from firing. I pushed it forward (it went very easily), and then it was allowed to fire with another trigger squeeze.

That brings our failure rate to 1.5%, or our success rate to 98.5% in the first 200 rounds fired in this NIB & unmodified Sig Mosquito.

I notice the green dots aren't really very bright. Not sure if they're really all that useful, or if I'm just too old fashioned to notice them. Not a negative in my mind, but not a big positive either. (my fuddish background probably wouldn't allow me to appreciate them anyhow )

All in all, my admiration of the little pistol jumped further up again today, as I find myself liking it much more than I ever thought I would. Super smooth, extremely comfortable, and overall, a handful of fun!

I may order another one, in the threaded version, if this one continues to shine.

Glad you posted too.

That looks like a very fair price from what I've seen.

100 rounds more downrange.

Once more, the slide didn't quite close all the way on round number (2)73. I pushed it forward manually about 1/8", then fired as normal. I suspect a cleaning would solve this issue, but I don't have any plans to clean the gun until it's had a chance to break in a bit more.

I've decided that a slightly larger grip, or just a set of Hogues would suit me a little better. (My trigger finger needs a little more distance to feel 100% comfortable.) Doubt if Hogue would ever make them without knowing they could sell bajillion sets of them. Does anyone here know of any after-market grips that are available for the Sig Mosquito?

I've also gotten used to loading the mags, now that I've figured out a way that's easy for me. (index finger of off-hand on the button, in a semi-cupped grip)

I'm still running anywhere between 500-1000 rounds through my Mosquito per week with no problems.  It's run with an Outback II and Rem Sub-sonic.  It's my primary range gun since it's cheap to run and a ton of fun.

That said, I just got a Charger and had the barrel threaded last weekend.  It's a tad more fun with the hi-cap mags.

something.....interesting i found with mine:

i took it to the range along with my 226 and a lady friend. she liked the Mozzie and the mk12, but more on that later. i loaded the mag, chambered, aimed at target and pulled trigger. pow.  pulled trigger. click. tap, rack, pow. click. again, tap, rack, pow. click.
thought to my self " every other round bad?  not with my luck. so i went to "workstation" and guess what?? the slide safety was on. it fired every other round with the safety on.  so i flipped it off, and emptied the mag.  i'm used to pistols with no safety, so i didn't feel unsafe with it, and didn't check the safety before i started shooting, but it made me think. can't wait for the .22 kit for the 226.

I picked up a Mosquito today at the gun show.  It's a 63xxx gently USED gun.  It came with two mags and cost me $340 out the door.  You can't tell it's even used, and obviously a more recent serial #.  I can't wait to get out and shoot it.  So question....

What recoil spring are you guys using?  I'm wondering if you guys who are having trouble with the slide going back into battery fully aren't using the light spring???  They come with a light and heavy spring - which ones are you guys using with WHICH ammo.  I plan on using CCI's, so which spring should I have in?

New skeeter owner here.  New reverse 2-tone SN F012XXX.  Didn't clean it to start with.  Ran a quick 100 CCI mini-mags through it at the range (with the installed "white" spring)...not one problem at all.
DA trigger is smooth but long and strong.
Single action is a long, light take-up, then a crisp break.  Accuracy so far is just so-so, but I've got to spend more time with it and different ammo makes.
Got it for $320 including tax and transfer out the door.

I finally bought a Mos about a month ago.  Mine seems to feed and eject fine, but the trigger sticks in the rear position and I have to push it forward manually to reset it.  There is spring tension because when I start to push it forward it pops the rest of the way forward.  I've cleaned and lubed as best as I can but it still does it.  I guess all the new ones aren't trouble free.

Yes!

I have a Sig Mosquito Sport with the extended barrel, I have NEVER had a failure,  I shoot Bulk Federal Copper Plated Hollow Point's from Walmart.

NEVER shoot lead bullets with out a copper plating.   But why would you anyway when the Federal Bulk Pack's are soo cheap..

I have also shot CCI Mini-Mags and CCI Stingers out of the Mosquito, again no issues with any of them.

Just make sure if you get a Mosquito that you get one that comes with 2 springs, the white one (Softer Spring) should be installed from the factory.

Kind of old thread, but I just traded my buckmark for a Sig. I carry a 228, nightstand and glove box guns are 226.

Figured it would be best to try to keep them all consistent, and my wife will practice more with a 22.

So my questions are, I got two springs. One longer and one short. Which would be the best for subs since it will also be suppressed 99% of the time.

Also are there any sites to show the modifications listed to make it more reliable.

The buckmark was one of my favorite guns. I really hope this is reliable
