Got this at a local auction advertised as found in river frame is pitted pretty good someone replaced the barrel and cylinder action is very smooth and locks up is rock solid. Am I going to lose my fingers trying to shoot it? It’s definitely a wall hanger more then a range toy but I would like to make it go bang. What should I check over on it before I try and shoot it? | At first glance, the barrel/cylinder gap looks excessive, as in very excessive. Maybe with some very light handloads I might shoot it a few times. And put it on the wall. jmtcw |

The top of the line Colt Python was really nothing more then a Trooper .357 with a ribbed barrel, a more tuned action, and a better blue job. Strength wise the Trooper is just as strong as a Python and the Trooper was often called a "poor man's Python". Have a gunsmith check it out for barrel-cylinder gap and correct timing and operation, and if he passes it, shoot the dickens out of it. The pitting is not going to affect the strength as long as the interior action isn't compromised. |
