I’m thinking about picking up a .45 colt convertible but I’d be shooting .45 ACP exclusively, do they shoot well or are there issues?

Nope but reloads can be tricky since they index off the case mouth

45 Long Colt is a wonderful revolver cartridge.
Perhaps you should consider using that. Rimmed cases tend to be easy to reload: re-size…..expand the mouth of the case slightly to make it easy to load the bullet….seat to the correct depth with die set to crimp lightly.  It is actually better than reloading the .45 acp

I already have an old Vaquero in .45 Colt, I just want a cowboy gun that’s going to shoot a cheaper, more available cartridge.

I also don’t reload and currently am unable to, unfortunately.

While I have no personal experience, my memory tells me that 30+ years ago people reported issues with accuracy shooting .45 ACP through convertibles.  That was 30+ years ago so Ruger could well have changed specs on them since.

Hmmm.  Looks like my memory is messing with me.  I coulda swore that nominal diameter for a .45 Colt projectile was .455" and for the .45 ACP .452".  A quick check on Wikipedia shows both of them at .452".  Assuming that information is correct, I wouldn't think there would be any negligible loss in accuracy with the .45 ACP round.

Maybe I'm confusing the 9mm / .357 Magnum convertible with .355" / .357" diameters?

What's your definition of "well"?

I bought a Ruger Flat Top Convertible 45ACP/45 Colt last December. No issues at all shooting 45 ACP. I didn't really wring it out as far as accuracy is concerned, because I bought it to load/shoot 45 Colt, but what shooting I did with the ACP cylinder it shot reasonably accurately.

The 45 Colt cylinder shot very well.

FWIW the 45 ACP and 45 Colt use the same diameter bullets; .452".

The 45 convertibles are gtg.  45 Colt and ACP have the same diameter now.

The 357/9mm ones kinda suck with 9mm.

Took almost three weeks for the vendor to ship but I picked it up today.

I have to say I’m not impressed with the fit of the grips and the finish is nowhere near as good as my old Vaquero, they could have for a lot better job with the polishing. For nearly $1,000 I expected better.

That’s a bummer. I saw a new Vaquero at the LGS and was impressed by the polish so I had to snap a pic. Camera doesn’t do it justice of course.

The worst of it is the tooling marks on the barrel, you can’t feel them or anything, but you can see them. Terrible picture but hopefully you can tell what I’m talking about, they run all the way around the barrel from muzzle to chamber. There are also tooling marks on the trigger guard.
