I've created the USP Compact Mod 1

Inspired by the P10 variant of the USP Compact for German police use (has a hammer) and the love of the controls on my HK45C - I made a call to HK.

They do not hate us, they were in fact excited I wanted to do this and told me all the parts needed:

HK45c safety lever: SKU#50234339 - $17

HK45c magazine release: SKU#50234270 - $13

HK45c hammer with spur: SKU#50218570 - $52

So for under $100 I was able to use OEM HK parts from HK to make it a far better pistol for me. Outstanding IMO. These were all out of stock on website but when I called they had no issue getting an order together and out the door within a day.

I have never worked on an HK and install was a breeze. Took me 20 min start to finish and that included watching two videos

Yes!! I just put that same safety lever in a full size and it makes the gun fit and feel so much better!

I'll just make this my running thread vs cluttering up with a new one.

Took the Teutonic Wunderpistole off to the range this morning before the offspring woke up. Wanted to check out the changes with real trigger time and also do some informal testing on how the $0.20 cpr Monarch brass from Academy shoots.

for the TL:DR crowd: I should of found a way to buy one of these years ago as I treat it as a single action Glock 19. After 20 years of primarily Glock ownership and shooting (some 1911 and CZ in there as well), I am making the choice to focus my range time and training around this pistol.

Is it expensive for what it is? Eh, yes. I'm in it for right at $900 after taxes, shipping, transfer - BUT - it was NiB and came with +3 NiB mags (total of 5), for less than I could get one new. So I'm thrilled for the price. That said, younger me would say, "Get a G19, holster, 5 more mags, and a case of ammo for the same price" and then make fun of HK's.

Is it outdated? Yes, a proper rail would fix most complaints. Compared to the other DA/SA guns which can be run in condition 1 - I think it's the best option out there, maybe tied with the P-01 Omega but with a nod to the HK for better safety level design / location.

I'm confused by some reviews out there which say it's snappy, I find the perceived recoil and time back on sights to be quicker than with my G19 (which has a dot) when shooting pairs. Got a ways to go working on draw times compared to the Glocks, but that will come with practice.

Brought out the whole compact crew to do some comparisons, as a side note the Monarch 115 grain ball shot fine out of everything.

Waiting for my order from Dawson to get made then sights will be on and it will be complete.

Thats fantastic, thanks for sharing. I don't have a HK45C but I do have the USP9C, is the safety lever that much better?

Thanks

I changed my mind. Add the back half (two cuts) of the front charging texture like what the P30 has.

And optic ready would be ideal, but that might be a bridge too far.

I like it.  I picked up a USPc 40 a few months ago and have been thinking of trying the 45c safety lever.  It looks like it would fit my hand better.  I did add one of the P30 17 round magazine spring kits to one of my magazines and it hold 13 rounds now.  From what I was able to tell HK uses the same follower for 9/40; it loads 13 easily and there is no issue inserting it on a closed slide.  Only about 100 rounds through it so far but no issues.  I believe those spring bits would make your 13 round mags into 15 round mags.

What made you pick the usp compact over say a p30? I’ve always wanted a usp compact but have a p30 and didn’t think I was missing out. You have peaked my curiosity. Thanks

Two reasons:
- Owner feedback, doesn't matter if die hard HK or just part of a collection, the USP and USPc seem to always be the darlings. I took it as if you buy a "Porsche, get the 911 first".
- See above, peak reliability.

I also wanted to keep it at the G19 size and the P30 mirrors my G45 in size.

Now I'm off to also look at P30's as well

Oh for sure. The usp is a tank. I have the .45 full size and I cannot manipulate it cause of how small my hands are.

See if you can fondle one somewhere, it's drastic notably against the .45 sized pistols.

I stopped going to my lgs cause I would go broke even more than I am now.  If I want something, I either look for it or have my ffl get it for me. I have to u load some stuff before I can buy more. I’m getting out of the sig p365’s and if they sell, I may look for a usp 9 compact.

Another couple hundred rounds early this morning before the heat showed up.

This is quickly becoming by favorite pistol. I'll keep comparing it to the G19 as it's the most common compact out there (and I've owned / carried them for years). It's not as fast, but I've only had it a month - but holy shit am I more accurate. Yet to have an issue, and it's fed everything Ive shot through it: Wolf steel case, blazer aluminum, various 115/124 grain ball, and HST's.

I've got Dawson sights and JM Kydex on order, can't wait for it to be complete.

I shoot my full size USP-9 way better than my Gen 5 G19. I feed mine mostly 124 gr ball and 124 gr HSTs. It eats it happily. Also the JM Kydex is awesome it’s what I carry my USP in. I also recommend putting a V3 (decocker only) plate in it, I hate manual safeties.

Here is a 15 round group from 10 yards that I shot yesterday:

I also made the change to HK from Glock recently and I've been pleasantly surprised at my accuracy even under rapid fire compared to the Glock.
I have a P30sk, I use the small grip inserts.  No optic, no light on it.  It's as pleasant to carry as it is to shoot!

I may also grab a 9mm compact at some point but the modular grip is what made me get the 30sk vs the Compact first.

Nice!

I've had the VP9 and P2000, like both grips (sans lack of texture on P2000), so was skeptical on the USPc (been years since I held one - first time in a while was at ffl picking it up) with them being "chunky".

I'd say it is more in line with the thinness of the CZ-75 compact with thin grips on it. It's a smidge thinner than a G19. Front to back is about the same on all of them.

The USPc 9mm in LEM (V7) is:

81000333 - (2) 13rd magazines and standard sights
81000334 - (3) 13rd magazines and night sights
81000335 - (2) 10rd magazines and standard sights

There might be a 10rd version with 3 mags and night sights out there also, just couldn't find it with a quick search.

Sigh.

Which Dawson sights did you order and which  options for the JM Custom Kydex holster did you choose? I just installed the HK45 mag release and safety on my compact and this gun is so much more usable. Still hunting for that compact hammer.

Edit: also installed the 15rd to 17rd conversion kit on the 13rd compact mags.

Thanks for this post. I’m returning to HKs after years of being away so reading this is timely and nostalgic and awesome. Seems like the USPs may be enjoying renewed interest. I also found a low cost P2000 v1 LEM that is en route to me, in addition to my USP9c.

Does your USP9c still function as a V1 DA/SA, correct? I assume the hk45 hammer is easier to thumb back for cocked/locked SA carry?

so far so good, I've yet to have a holster from JM I didn't like.

Wears well from 3-4:45, feels no different than my G19/45 in a JMC.

Another 250 rounds this glorious cool and rainy TN morning.

Focused on aiwb draw (got HK to carry this way) and DA first shot.

Hours of dry firing had paid off, stoked.

Now to get a second one in LEM.

Love it.

This thread has me shopping for a USPc now. OP, the mods are interesting. The one gripe I've had with these is the decock/safety lever making the gun all that much more wide at that point but I prefer DA/SA so ruled out the LEM (no lever). Does the HK45c lever make the width that much smaller? It looks like it does.

Haven't really looked at it from a width standpoint, but from a grip perspective it is a massive improvement.

How did I miss this thread? I have a Langdon USPc 9mm with an RMR. I put the ambi safety from my HK45 on it when I converted the HK45 to LEM. It’s definitely an improvement over the USP safety. One day I’ll get around to swapping all of my non-LEM USPs to the HK45 safety.

They install a Gray Guns short reset trigger and fluff and buff everything then cut the slide and install their trijicon plate and sights.

ETA: it’s a Lipsey’s gun. Came setup that way. Not sure if they would do the work if you sent them your USP or not.
