J Frame carry (Page 1 of 4)

| So I carry a J frame as a bug everyday at work. Does anyone still carry one in todays world? I do carry one off duty occasionally when I'm in low threat environments. Just wondering. I love J frames and just cant altogether give them up for carry. |

| A friend who is a retired prosecutor and used to investigate officer involved shootings often packs a J-frame... says a lot of the shootings he investigated involved contact shots and the slide being pushed out of battery is a significant concern to him. Not a boomer either, in his mid-50s. |

I have been carrying a 442 in the pocket during the summer months for over 10 years now. I went through the micro .380 craze (P3AT, LCP, etc) and never felt the need to switch over. Then came the micro 9mm craze (Shield, G43, etc) and still never felt the need to switch despite owning the several of the aforementioned alternatives. Now the P365, Hellcat, and Shield Plus are all the rage... A J-frame just carries better in the pocket than a compact auto, and is very accurate if you know what you're doing. For the record i'm certainly not a boomer (mid 30s), but I grew up primarily shooting revolvers from my dad's collection, and i'm very competent with them. I left LE in November 2022 after almost a decade. Never once have I felt under-gunned in lower threat environments with a J-frame, as most defensive engagements are over in a matter of seconds with only a handful of rounds fired. On the occasion that I ventured into a higher threat environment (mall, movie theater, bad area, etc) I would always make the effort to carry a G19 and an extra magazine on my person that day. |

My BUG at work is a S&W 342 in a 5-Shot Leather ankle rig. Sits against the top of my hiking boot and I forget it’s there. I work plainclothes and run a long gun 90% of the time for takedowns but it’s nice having the backup. Off duty in the summer I’ll go G43X but that’s as small as I go these days. Attached File |

I have mine in a desantis pocket holster, works great in 90% of my Pants and the gun is allways correctly oriented to get a nice grip. It is a terrible package compared to my 365X with a RD sight but i just love revolvers and i allways tell myself that its better than no gun. |
| I have a 642 with the clipdraw screwed into the side of it. It is carried 90% of the time. I never leave unarmed thanks to it. I also carry it in a pocket holster in my jeans front pocket sometimes as well. I have an ankle holster for it but only used it for work. I carry a safariland split 6 with a comp reload, a desantis 6 round dump pouch, and if needed a couple of the bianchi speed 6 strips or a few more hks speedlloaders if I have extra open pockets, otherwise those stay in the car. If I’m going to the city or on a trip I switch to a semi auto like a glock or beretta. But the 642 works for my lifestyle. I know the limits with it. I’m not trying to make shots across Walmart. I would rather try to run out the back. This is to at least have a firearm at all times. And I do dress around a pistol alot so I can carry full-size if needed. Used to aiwb my glock 34 with light and red dot all the time. I just don’t live an exciting life anymore and live in a small town and never travel anymore. It’s quite boring |
 AIWB for seems like forever. Only thing that changes is the grips, I've tried em all. Currently using the Pachmyer Guardian Grips with the pushbutton pinky extender. |

| Used to carry one every day on my weak side ankle. Finally made the leap to a Glock 26 a few years ago and sold off most of my J-frames. I would have no issue carrying one again if I didn't like the G26. Reliable and five rounds of decent ammo, what is not to love. |

I carry a J Fame in a pocket holster regularly around the house (I work primarily from home). I used to carry a G19 IWB or AIWB all day but lower back pain has convinced me to switch to carrying something lighter when I'm not out and about. For years I carried it in a belly-band when I ran too. It just disappeared under gym shorts and a tee shirt. If anyone saw anything I just looked like I had a bit more spare tire than I actually do.  I'll also carry it in a pocket holster fairly regularly if I need deeper concealment when out and about for work (usually in slacks and a dress shirt). Outside of the house I really prefer the G19 but it's a convenient option to have available and it gets picked for carry often enough to be handy. |

One of the guys I work with carries a 340 PD. He runs the Buffalo Bore 20A load in it. For context, this guy is 29 and owns a plethora of semi-autos, he just likes how light and comfortable the 340 PD is. I've considered buying a 340 PD in the past to serve as a BUG, but so far, no dice. There are other gun purchases I'm more interested in making. |

My go to daily is a 340PD no lock .357 mag with CT laser grips in a DeSantis pocket holster. She's a handful with .357 so I usually carry .38 +P 158 grain Golden Sabers in it. But I like having the option to carry full power magnum loads if I feel the need. |

I've watched a lot of shooting videos over many years now and I've noticed a common thread. If you eliminate Yute vs Yute neighborhood spraying, and the rare fully involved LE gunfight, citizens seem to handle even groups of predatory transactional criminals quite handily when they open the ball by firing a handful of relatively accurate shots. There's rarely more than one armed perp, and the nearly universal reaction to being shot at is to flee. "Failures to stop" are vanishingly rare, and tend to bring out speculative observations like "He could have loaded a boxcar full of corpses..."-but they don't. Sometimes it takes an additional second or two to fall down and a barrage erupts. Everyone tends to shoot until their target goes down. Lots of people continue to shoot at clearly disengaging criminals(which I'm fine with as a moral principle...but it doesn't reflect the utility or necessity of those extra rounds), but the pattern has remained consistent for decades now. The presentation of the gun ends most predatory attacks. A shot that misses ends the majority of the rest. Up until here you could use a blank pistol... A hit anywhere by anything leaves only the furthest outliers. A center hit above the diaphragm places nearly every human, regardless of mental state or pharmacology, flat on the ground reflecting on life choices. Awareness, decisiveness, being armed, a modicum of skill and basic tactics far outweigh an extra five or ten shots. Have a reliable gun that you will carry 24/7, and you are golden. |

I think feudists post is spot on. In this era of everyone preoccupied with capacity all that matters really is accurate hits on target ( which are undoubtedly harder to achieve with a snub unless you really practice with one.) but the reality is for civilians a gunfight is over in 2-3 shots nearly every time. Even large groups of reprobates scatter when the lead flies. Having a decent plan practicing it both from a firearms deployment point of view and a scenario based thinking mindset goes a long way 99% solution is not to go places known for bad things going down ( not always an option due to work commute etc) Stay away from nightclubs and bars past 11PM and don’t associate with any criminals/ low life’s And your chances of needing to defend oneself with a handgun go down greatly |

I like mine, but the only thing I do with mine (Scandium J-frame that came with the laser grips maybe a 340PD?) is carry it with snakeshot when I'm out in the Texas brush hog hunting in case rattlers. Otherwise, why not have more rounds in a slimmer, compact 9mm for social work? |
