Is there a list somewhere that has all of the models s&w has produced with chamberings, finish, variations, etc. for reference?

Yup - go buy the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" - you can get a hardcover copy or one for a Kindle.

If you have a small interest in S&W revolvers, it's well worth the cost. there is so much to learn in it.
