I have been in the market for older smith revolvers and stopped by a local gun store l and found a 15-4.It is 85-90% condition but doesn’t have factory grips. The grips on it are some type of target grips with s&w medallions. Timing and lockup are good. Side plate has been off as screws are not perfect. Best price I could get them to is 500 otd. Is this a fair price or should I pass?

My area that’s a good price. I’ve seen some pretty rough ones go for $800 or more. The local shops won’t haggle much on those old smiths.

I know most of the reasons that folks swap out grips .
For the life of me I don't know why they don't toss the original grips into a zip lock bag with a note that tells what firearm they belong to. When the owner has a lapse in memory or when the kids have to clean out grandpa's safe those nearly worthless grips can add considerable resale value to that gun. |

View Quote In some cases they sell the originals just as soon as they take them off. Now this might make collectors cringe, but looks like a good deal to a guy who is just going to shoot the gun. Cheaper now, as opposed to being higher a few years from now. Considering the danger of having the original grips thrown away by some one who wants to clean the place up, it starts to make some sense. |

The answer to if you should buy another gun is usually yes
I have a model 64 and 65, both a little beat up. But they are really fun. |

In my earlier “collecting” years I focused on the 19 and 66 snubs, but recently I’ve been enamored with the 38 Special K frames. 10’s, 15’s, 64’s, and 67’s. They just shoot so well…… |

Can't go wrong with k frames! |

My last one a battered old cop gun - definitely not 90% condition! Cost me $300- 15 years ago! I would say 500 is a good price these days. Be sure to post pictures once you pick it up

I can remember back in the revolver days, many gun shops had a box of cheap traded-in wooden grips, taken in when the owner wanted Pachmayrs. As recently as ten years ago, I bought set of original K-frame grips for $10. Showed some wear, but worked. |

In my area 500 bucks for a pre lock Smith would be a screaming deal.
They generally run around 750-800 and up depending on condition. |
