Found this in another forum and couldn't pass it up.
Anyone know when it was made?
Will most likely add the Hogue rubber grips as I prefer them.

-4 is not that old but pre Hillary hole. Pinned hammer firing pin.
Best guess 90’s gun probably the first generation of the 7 shot cylinder.

Nice addition.  Grips were definitely not original to that gun.  What’s up with the hammer?

I paid for one to be tuned by Nelson Ford. It's nice no doubt but a $20 spring kit feels the same to me.
I set the main spring screw pretty lite (for a better DA pull) but need to run Federal primers to ignite rounds.

Your triple alpha CBA is recorded in the standard catalog of S&W as being made in 1996.

If the other one is BPW. While not actually recorded (a lot were not), there are some that fall in sequence. I show a lot of BPs, but the last two are BPS and BPY before going a different tag set. It would put that one in somewhere in 1993.

Dash-4 is the best era

Old enough to not have the Hillary hole or MIM

New enough to be drilled & tapped.

I had mine cut to 5"

It shoot good. Needs a spring kit. I prefer the feel of these grips.

The 686-4 Plus models should all be from 1996 or 1997. The -5 came out in 1998 and was the first with MIM parts and CNC frame. The -6 has the IL and hasn't really changed since 2001 except for variations and their source for grips.

The 2.5" is the rarest of the bunch. I have a relatively common 6" one.

I have a 6" -5 that is not MIM, but it is a very early one. I also have a 4" -5 586 that is half and half. It has a standard trigger, but an MIM hammer.

Nice find! I didn't know they made a 7 shot with no lock. I have a snubby 686-4 and it's been great.

I had a -4 7 shot 2.5” made around 1996 that I traded for a Glock about 15 years ago because I am stupid AF. No, I seriously do think about that gun, I was an idiot to let to get away. As I’ve gotten older I enjoy revolvers more. That is a nice piece you’ve got there. I am currently looking at a 586 Comp for sale locally. I am trying to hold out for a S&W Night Guard if I can find one but at the price that 586 Comp is at I might have to jump on it.

Here's my hammerless S&W 640 357 magnum 2 1/2 Barrel. Police trade in.
Softish shooting with 357 mags for some reason. Real accurate also for super small notch fixed rear sights.

@Voland

I shipped it to Andy Horvath in Ohio several years ago.

He did a wonderful job
