Today I purchased from a friend a LNIB S&W Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman .357 magnum. 4" barrel, original box with Owner's Manual, Warranty Card, Screwdriver & Cleaning Rod. Serial number puts it around 1968/69. No marks on revolver or magna grips. I'm sure it was shot in it's lifetime, but obviously never carried. It needs a good bath, then I'll bury in back in safe. I owned a 6" Model 28 42 years ago that I foolish sold. I was lucky to have this one drop in my lap.

Very nice!

A 28-2 is on my short list.

LGS had a very clean example when I was picking up my S&W 25-5.

When I went back a week later it was gone.

Shop owner said it didn't last till the end of its 1st day in the case.

Congratulations!

That's a nice one. I have a similar one in the same shape. Mine came with some weird Italian target shooting grips. Replaced with faux ivory until I can find some like yours. I haven't even shot it yet.

I would shoot and carry the shit out of that.

Locking that in a safe should be a crime.

Agreed. Same with old muscle cars- my wife ( total Motörhead) thinks it is a crime when they auction off some old car with only a few thousand miles on it.

If it were some rare variation or had some historical significance may er safe queen it, but I certainly would not in this case

Sweet!  Love finding old guns in that condition.   I got mine like that but just the gun, no box.  It was nicknamed “the sock drawer gun” as it looks like someone bought in the seventies, fired a cylinder’s worth through it, cleaned it and put it in the sock drawer for the rest of its life.

I finally had to concede the N frame doesn’t fit my hands though.  I can muddle with it and get by but the 586 and 686 L frames are better as are my favorite k frames.

Mine is a safe queen until I find a minty model 15 or 66 to trade it for.  I have two 19s now so I lean toward the model 15 or even a perfect 18.

The old Smiths were made beautifully.  They have a soul unlike the latest guns in my humble opinion.

Then have me arrested if it's a crime. I have a 4" S&W Model 686 + that I'll carry if need be.

Thanks for sharing.   I think back to when ole Skeeter Skelton was proponent using Model 28s to make psuedo Model 24's.  J&G when out in Montana was the source for barrels and cylinders!

Ha!  the $300 6” model 19 and the $280 6” 586 can attest to that.

At least the guy wanting $300 for the Royal Blue Python had a 4”.   I gave him $400 as that’s all I had and telling him what it was truly worth (2x more) at the time.

Not in the photo is the plastic holster bag, wax paper wrap and the original receipt, which is in the box. The skimpy walnut grips were originally on gun when new.

At $450 you did extremely well. Amazing how deals are still out there and how they fall into our laps.

Great score OP.  I have a 28-2 in 4.0" and 6.0".  Very stout frame for power loads.

I bought a 28-2 about 10 months ago , decent shape , pined and recessed with a bit of holster wear.

Mine checked out to be in decent shape didn't have any of the original accessories and was wearing some Houge grips. Good news is I like shooting revolvers with the Houges but I would have liked the original grips.

What do folks do with all the stuff the guns come with? In my neck of the woods 90+% of the used revolvers come without a single extra thing.

As it turned out my gun was somehow messed up and in a box of 50 the fireing pin was hitting out of center on 30 rounds with 15 or so failing to fire.

My shop sells lots of consignment guns , don't know if it was consignment or shop owned. Shop owner sent it back to S&W and it works perfect now.
I would think somebody at least had to pay shipping (shop owner?) but it didn't cost me a penny.

This is why you deal with the local good guy shop!

Did all the usual test stuff and it appeared the cylinder was locking up correctly , not sure what was wrong and what was fixed but I came out fine on the whole deal.

I shudder to think how big of a pissing match it would have turned into if My gun had been a Gunbroker deal.

Agreed, around here it’d be about twice that price.  I wouldn’t take less than $800 for mine as it’s in near perfect condition.

Beautiful pistol op!

I picked up a NIB 28-2 4" about 2.5 years ago.

Figured a classy pistol needed classy leather.

New grips, really like how it turned out.

I'm a bit jealous as I have never found a model 28 for sale in my area.

When you least expect it one will be available. Especially if you're not looking for one. Hopefully you won't have to wait 42 years like I did.

This is the truth. I was browsing Gunbroker 2 weeks ago and a 4" popped up and I got it for under $500. Has some slight holster wear like a few in this thread and no other blemishes. I don't have original grips for it, yet and it didn't come with a box but I have a nice shooter that I can carry and use without worrying about.
