[ARCHIVED THREAD] - So I'm Gonna Do The Red Dot Thing (Page 1 of 2)

| I've been skeptical of red dots on pistols, but I'm gonna give it another go. I am buying a 19.5 MOS with my GSSF card in Jan. What is the go-to rds, Trijicon? |
|
Of you're going with an MOS, get that Trijicon adapter kit...
As far as an optic, I have two RMR'd M&Ps; one RM06 (3.25 MOA) and one RM07 (6.5 MOA). I greatly prefer the size of the 3.25 dot, I seem to pick it up much quicker and easier than the larger dot, oddly enough. |
|
Consider too what you want to shoot/how you shoot.
In competition, I have found I prefer the reticle of the Holosun (Eotech style - 1/2 moa center dot and a larger ring around it) over the single red dot of the RMR sights. Easier to pick up and faster shots with the ring reticle for me. Holosun 507C is what I am using: Holosun 507C - Opticsplanet Stick with any of the big names and you will be in good shape - Vortex, Trijicon, Holosun, Leupold, etc. |

Sig replaced my Romeo without a blink. I don't like the idea of having to turn it on and off, so the shake awake is awesome on the Holosun. The battery in it is for backup and low light. It also has an auto adjust feature for daylight or low light. |

Is there a green dot optic for pistols? I can't find the gold version on line, but did look through one at a store. It is hard to pick up stuff in a desert environment. |
| I've had four RMRs. The very old one is great. The next one is ok. The others were crap, unusable, and each went back for service twice. The factory rep admitted over the phone that they could not be repaired or replaced with ones which worked. Actually said I was 'lucky' (his word) to have a good one. |

I'd say trijicon RMR if you have the money.
If you don't want to spend that much, look at the Holosun 507C. I've also heard the CHPWS V3 GLOCK MOS adapter plate is a real upgrade over the OEM MOS plates. |

A lot of SMEs with no commercial interest are saying the Holosun is a serious duty grade optic. Also the DPP seems to be much more popular for competition use. Quoted:

Steve Fischer Aaron Cowan Off the top of my head are the 3 who have really put them through their paces including high round counts and durability. Recent P&S podcast they discuss the various options and the Holosun consistently tops the lists. The above 3 have tens of thousands of rounds on their various holosuns. On the same podcast, Fischer (Iirc) recommended the Holosun to an agency that wanted to RMR their guns but was hesitant to spend RMR money. I get the hesitancy to trust Chinese optics, but it seems by all accounts that Holosun realized they could make good money if they made their optics both price competitive and similar in durability. |

the Trijicon RMR battery is changed by removing the sight to insert a new 2032 into the bottom... they sell a thin cover plate to enclose the sight... I suppose this method was to lower the sight as much as possible
my Steel Challenge competition pistol is a G17 with a Swensen aftermarket slide factory milled mount for a Vortex Venom... only a couple of matches, but without a hiccup... lots of rounds on my Advantage Arms .22lr conversion for a G17 with a dove tail plate( DPP Titanium 7075-T6) mount for a Venom... |

A lot of SMEs with no commercial interest are saying the Holosun is a serious duty grade optic. Also the DPP seems to be much more popular for competition use. I will say this, the SRO is making fast inroads on the DPP in Carry Optics. The DPP was the go-to for CO because it has a relatively large window and arguably the clearest glass in the market with decent durability. That being said, the battery contacts are secured with this bullshit cellophane tape which leads to failures. Additionally, the choice of reticle are less than ideal. The "7.5" MOA is, in reality much larger than that and the 2.5 MOA dot is just a little too small for most folks. I run the 2.5 and it's not bad, but I'd much rather have a 3.5-5MOA. The battery failures finally killed it for me and I'm moving on to the SRO. The 5MOA reticle seems perfect, the window is forgiving and the durability should be better, barring drops. |

Trijicon is tip but I am also hearing good things from the HoloSun 508T. Dot use wise you may come to love them. When I first tried them I hated it as it was just ‘more to align with the irons’ in my mind at the time. Now I love them, especially as I get older (in my 50s currently). The trick I found is absolutely target focus (hard to break the decades of front sight focus only) then raise the pistol and see the dot on the target. The key here is don’t look at the sight/dot but focus on the target. The dot will be there when the pistol hits the cone of focus. Sounds odd but it works well if you work with it. Best of luck op! |

Regarding the Holosun, I recently went to a sage dynamics class. He said, as of that class, there were only three duty grade optics. RMR, Holosun, Acro. I was surprised to see him speak of the Holosun so highly. After seeing what he had done to them, it made more sense. It’s a solid optic. I snagged one and have one on a .22. I really like it. Eventually I’ll put one on a Glock but I still have more RMRs laying around than optic ready handguns

I would echo the sentiments in here, I have 10k+ round counts on both a Trijicon RMR (1 moa model, RM09 I think?) and the Holosun 507c. Love them both. Used a Leupold Delta Point Pro on my Carry Optics guns, purely competition use. I went through 4 of them in the course of 13-15k rounds. They would get repaired or replaced by Leupold for free, but I lost faith personally. They would just start to intermittently shut off, and I generally didnt run iron sights on my CO guns, so I was fairly pissed. All on glocks w/Unity Tactical slides. |

Holosun really did their homework with their 407/507's. They're G2G. My only bitch/grip/complaint is I wish the dot were just slightly larger...but I'm still getting used to a RDS on a handgun so YMMV. |

I’m getting (or have gotten) old, so I’m very attached to iron sights on handguns. Most of my favorite guns are not offered with factory optics cuts and/or wouldn’t be good platforms for optics. I don’t see, for instance, how a Beretta 92 series gun would work between the open slide and firing pin block rising above the top of the slide. Yeah, Beretta 92, I told you I was old. My first duty gun was a full size 92 (and before that my first carry gun was a 92 FSC) and I still love them. Anyway, I decided to give it a try. So, I ordered myself a soulless plastic pistol with an optics cut (in this case an IWI Masada) and I’m going to get an optic. Probably a Holosun to start. I’m going to give it a real chance, perhaps I will become a convert. |

I've heard the SRO doesn't survive drops as well as the RMR due to the round window, but aside from that, it seems to be a great comp optic. It's larger than the RMR, so you may not want to use it for carry, but it's a perfectly acceptable RDS for general use. |

Quoted: DPP's are prone to failure at lower round counts. The issue is that the batter contacts shear on the DPP. Multiple shooters have Holosun and Trijicon RDS over 10,000 rounds on multiple guns. The SRO has replaced the DPP for many competitors. https://content.invisioncic.com/r270761/monthly_2018_10/6602A14E-E21F-42C3-ADED-DDCA1B548283.jpeg.568dba8c6d4d70fabc95d1a1d49143c5.jpeg

SME? Thanks for the replies. I could only find the Holosun with solar, do they make one without? Does the RMR or Holosun have to be dismounted to change the battery? |
| I seent this before on a couple occasions firsthand. I really wish that optic manufacturers would run their optics through a hefty mechanical shock and vibe profile on a shaker table. I get its expensive, but man I wonder if it wouldnt weed out a lot of these issues. At least, I am very certain they dont. |

Currently have a 507C with the green dot mounted on a 500 JRH revolver. I figure if it can stand up to recoil like that it should be GTG for carry use.
I don't have a ton of rounds through it yet but so far I am really liking the optic. Green is quick to pick up and seems to be more visible at similar brightness levels as a red dot. |

Quoted: All the 507/407's have solar. The solar is there merely as a backup to the battery and afaik only switches to solar in bright sunlight, then back to the battery if there isn't enough sunlight. It's seamless and doesn't need any manual input from the end user so you won't notice at all. The battery life is like 50k hrs anyway (or 100k on the 508T iirc) so it's nothing to worry about. The 407C on sale is probably the best value on a durable red dot out there right now (assuming you don't need/want the circle reticle). Seen them go for like $170-180. |
