Been thinking of picking up a Springfield Mil-Spec 1911. Any pros vs cons to this? |

| I have two. One is dead stock and the other has had a few upgrades. Both run fine: Accurate and reliable. But to be honest, the Tisas “Army Model” I have is very similar but the fit and finish is a little better. Still, the Springfields are solid and dependable pistols and I would not part with either of mine. |

Solid pistol that is nicely finished. I would say it is more or less equal in quality to other production 1911's though not as nice as their higher-end production guns. I really like the spur hammer, military style grip safety, and the arched mainspring housing. I don't actually care for the short trigger shoe, but it has never been an issue at the range. I paid just over $500 just before COVID, but even now I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up (if I didn't have one) for the prices I've seen lately. I highly recommend. |

It all depends on what you want it to do and how it functions for you. I always have issues with standard 1911 pistols without a beavertail as I get hammer bite, unless you change out the hammer. The spur hammer gets me every time. If you plan on doing any upgrades to it - sights, beavertails, internal parts, etc., it is going to get more expensive than if you had bought something like a TRP or the like, initially. Some models/brands you can't even install different sights on stock guns. For me, unless it is of historical value/prominence, my ocd kicks in and I usually get all of the bells and whistles modern 1911 pistols have. |

I recently used a Mil Spec for my “Narco 1911” project lol I wanted a pistol that had that traditional old school look but also incorporates some of the modern upgrades vs old GI 1911s. I wanted this to be a shooter…not a trophy piece. Something I won’t be afraid to carry and shoot hard. Anyway. I already know some of you will like it and some of you will hate it. I think it turned out amazing and I’m super happy with the outcome for the overall cost of the project. Attached File Attached File |

I wasn’t really fond of the gold either to be honest but I felt like it was necessary to finish out the narco look lol That being said, I actually really like the look of the basic black Magpul grip panels…I almost like the look better. The black makes the gun have a very western, almost Colt SAA feel to it (at least to me). It may be interesting to throw on some pearl/white/high polish wood grips and see how that looks. The gold grips make it feel more like a work of art in a way though. The gold ties together the whole intentional "very much embellished" feeling that matches the project theme and it really brings out the engraving on the slide and frame. Both ways look great and well done! |
