So I took the old 19-3 out for a very quick shoot this afternoon and determined I just don’t like Pachmayr Grippy’s that are on it. There must be a better way. To be fair the gun came with these grips and they are old. Shooting PPU Defenseline 158gr JHP’s just for a short plinking session.

Pics of the gun and bullet recovered after shooting:

New grips for comparison:

Hard to say without knowing what your preferences are but a couple of suggestions would be Hogue for wood (or a different style of rubber) or VZ for a hard, G-10/carbon fiber/laminate type.

Of course, you could always try to find some OEM grips but, at least around here, folks are just a little too proud of them ($$$) for my budget.

*ETA*
Nice revolver.
Can't remember ever seeing a S&W turned plum; Rugers and Dan Wessons yeah.

*ETA2*
I don't like Pachy Grippers either.
Had some on my S&W 629 thirty years ago and grew to hate them in very short order.

Badass!! A 19-3 4” is definitely on the list to add.  What about some original OEM grips or some Hogue Pau Ferro grips?

Unless you get factory originals—which you should—Altamont is what you seek.

Looking at the Hogue and Altamont and can tell I don’t want something with finger grooves. Doesn’t have to be original S&W grips as this is a woods and working gun that sees outdoor use.

I am in agreement with many of the others here, Houges seem to fit me better than the packs and many of the S&W factory stuff,,

Is your gun really all those different funky colors or is that a photo/lighting trick?

My gun truly has a cylinder and barrel that is plum colored. Doesn’t bother me any, especially for what I paid for it. Love the target hammer and trigger that came with it. Doubt it’s had more than a few hundred rounds through it.

Target I think

If I understand correctly, coke bottles didn't have the speedloader cut

I put a set of those in my Model 28 a couple weeks ago.  Imitation ivory with an imitation Tyler T-grip.  I'm loving it.  Fair price and quick shipping.  I'm happy.

Herrett's Stocks.  Send them a tracing of your hand and they'll make you a custom set.  It's worth it!  Had a set made for me in walnut for my Model 28.

I bought a 686 with those Pachmayrs. They suck. They are narrow and hard. I got some Ahrends. All wood but easier on the hande because they are wider.

Do you want rubber or wood?

There are some decent wood grips from Thailand on eBay. Not perfect like and Ahrends or Eagle, but excellent for the money.

I've seen vintage guns with "faded" bluing. It can happen over time. Dependent on the bluing type used, and the alloys of the firearm. As you can see with this nice old 19-3, the cylinder/barrel have turned, not the frame. Different alloys. It happens. I have one that's done that, just the cylinder, nothing else and it's very slight.

It also happens when bluing guns the first time or refinishing them. You'll see the purple on some parts when they come out of the hot bluing salts. Shocking them, sometimes more than once in the rinse tank then back into the salts will usually turn the purple black. Depends on the salts used, also.

This well-worn 4” M19-3 I got out of an estate sale three years ago. 1971 production by the serial #. The factory grips it’s wearing in the pic were actually in a separate box and looked unused, as if they’d been taken off  the day it was purchased. The aftermarket grips on the left were on the gun. Other than that, and a bit of exterior wear here and there, it was still tight and very accurate.

@blueinterceptor I must have used a generic search engine. I posted that, tried actual Google and they popped right up.

At present I am impatiently waiting for Grasshorn elk grips for my 3 1/2” pre model 27.

But Culina look extremely nice as well.

This is a gorgeous rig!! Who makes the holster? El Paso Saddlery? I will see about the BK grip for my Ruger Service Six. Leaning towards either Culina or Altamont Coke Bottle grips.

Thank you.

Yes.  El Paso Saddlery Tom Threepersons holster.  I don't remember if it's the floral pattern or the western floral pattern.

A bnib 1973 Model 28 found at a gunshow for $795 in 2022. I figured a classy gun needed a classy holster.  It came with the smaller grips instead of the large target grips.  It wasn't until just the past few weeks l found the grip adapter and imitation ivory grips.  I very pleased with how it turned out.

Just a follow up on this and a huge thank you to everyone. I ended up ordering these from Altamont: S&W K/L Square Coke Bottle Target American Walnut Checkered with Bronze Medallions

That said once they arrive I’ll put them on and post up a picture in this thread with how they look. If they are not workable my next option will be to go with the Harretts which will require me to do a hand tracing. Either way I’ll post up pics of how these Altamont’s look and my impressions.

Nice looking gun. I’ve been using my revolvers more these last couple months too.  Not positive but usually the purples I’ve seen on S&W are from guns that were reblued at some point.  Or that’s what I was told.

I will echo the above - I have as set of these from the mid 80's for a duty 19. Loved them and they help tame the recoil of the full power .357 loads. These are Jordan Trooper grips, designed by Border Patrolman Bill Jordan.
But . . . today, they are not cheap

Do not overlook the original S&W FGC grips! I remember when gun stores had a box with new take-off factory grips that sold for $5. The SB version works better for me than the RB.
