Long story short, I have a 6" 686, dont like it. I want a 4". Found a barrel on Numrich for a decent price, and I am looking at a local gunsmith to see about getting it re-barreled buy him.

No sentimental connection, just that I have the gun and other places I looked at dont have any smiths that I like (though Ive been giving a option to a 2.5" Redhawk and also found a 686+ with 2.5" barrel).

Would it be worth getting the work done? Or just sell the gun and buy something else?

Sell it and get something else.

Since there is no connection and you aren't doing it to learn, then there is no reason to impact it's value in a negative way.

It’ll probably be less expensive to sell or trade it for what you want.

Rebarreling a Smith is neither as easy or cheap as it seems.

I have the same issue.  I have a 6 inch 686 and it's too big for anything other than the range.

I'd sell it and buy a 4"

Just as a reference point, I bought a good condition 4" 686 pre-lock on GunBroker for $625 about a month ago.  Changing the gun out is bound to be cheaper than rebarreling the current one

I’m in the sell it and buy what you want camp. Rarely if ever does work like that work out financially. Even just the labor could make it not worth it.
