[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Official CT Preban Thread (Page 4 of 4)
I was given a preban mini14 and I really didn't even think about it until a few days ago. My uncle passed away 15 years ago and he loved to shoot it a bunch and my aunt just recently gave it to me. I really don't want to add all the doodads on it out of respect really, but is funny that you mention the whole instances with lesser know rifles being preban or not. I'll just start lookin for old 10/22s. I love em anyway, why not own 4 or 5. |
I know someone with a preban Mini-30 and I'm thinking about trying to get it from him. I want something for 7.62x39 and I hate the SKS. Plus this stock is badass! |
Oh man don't tempt me! |
|
Not too long ago I walked into a shop (the old D'Andrea's) and saw a genuine HK 91 up on the wall. It had a fugly thumbhole stock. I asked Roger (the owner) if the thing was CT legal. He said "YES." I said "WTF?" He said "Take a closer look at the receiver." He remanufactured it by stamping an extra "1" on the model #. So instead of HK 91, it's an HK 911. Very slick. lol. |
That's cutting it pretty close if all he did was re stamp the thing without changing any aspect of the weapon. The smart thing to do would be to re manufacture it as a G3K which means SBRing it, therefore negating 922r, cutting down the cocking tube and changing the forearm. that way it is a completely different gun. |

I just picked up a completed preban Olympic arms SGW Stop Sign Lower from a friend here in CT. This will be my 2nd preban that I have. I am thinking of doing a dedicated 9mm 16" CAR setup on it but not sure. Then again, my other preban needs a 3X magnifier and I'm running low on funds. |
I bought that HK, Ther restamp was done by Hk when the rifles were tied up in customs before the 89 import ban. |
nice. how much was your lower? |
Chris, I heard the aimpoint clone magnifiers actually work well if you don't want to spend the $400 for the real ones. |
|
Hmm.. The fake aimpoint clone had the same eye relief as the real aimpoint mag and I didn't look at the inside walls of the magnifier as I usually look through it. |
|
Not side by side, but I've used and own enough optics to know the difference between 1" eye relief and 3" eye relief. The Aimpoint 3x Mag clone I tried had 'AIMPOINT' on it faintly imprinted horizontally. Eye relief was almost the same as my ACOG TA11, and yes the real Aimpoint's eye relief was about 3", this can easily be adjusted by moving the clone 3x magnifier closer to your eye. My Millet DMS1 1-4x DoD optic has the same eye relief as the Aimpoint did, about 3", which I've grown not to like. I've also compared it to my larue poboy special which uses a henzoldt 2.5x optic, and that has a 1" eye relief, but the best and brightest dang magnifier I've seen in a tiny package. I am a firm believer of the fact, that just because something is expensive does not make it better than something that is cheaper. Works with many things. Not everything, but many things. the quality and manufacturing of the eotech and aimpoints is top notch, but $500 for a simple 3x optic is way overpriced. Make it $250 and I'd consider it. |
Never said they were the same, but not to keep beating a dead horse here, people buy what they want and some people get by with cheaper parts while others like to know they've spent the most possible. I personally don't care for copyright infringement myself, but you can buy clones of stuff without any registered trademarks on them, so you could always buy a non-marked piece. IF your life is riding on it, get the best possible. If it's for range day plinking there would be no discerning difference. heck these things were originally designed for Airsoft use and the clone magnifiers are holding up great from what I've read, which is a LOT harder on an optic than let's say taking your rifle out of the range bag or case, putting it on the table shooting 20rounds then putting it back in. Maybe I'll get an clone mag and post a review once and for all about it's sturdiness. God knows I'll put it through HELL as you've seen the videos of me blasting at the range. |
| The 5F was the model with the wood stock and the metal folding piece. By putting an aftermarket stock on your preban mini-14 I don't see how it would become a 5F. Then again it states "folding Stock model" right in the statute, so even though it specifies 5F it may be interpreted wrong by LE and then it would be up to the courts to decide. Hard to say on this one. If the statute is interpreted correctly then you are good to go. If not then who knows..... |
|
Since it would become a folder model, even though ti's not the 'original' folding model Mini14, IMO it's not worth the trouble you'd get into if they'd question it's legality. Lawyer fees and they'd be looking into ALL other firearms you own to try to nail you for anything illegal on those too, and dig up your past/life. |
|
I wonder, do the Mini-14/5F's have that designation marked on them, or do they just have "Mini-14" imprinted on the top of the receiver like all the rest? If they are like all the rest, then I won't risk it. But if someone has one that has the "Mini-14/5F" printed on it, maybe I'll just carry a snapshot of that imprint with me in my gun bag |
Just "mini-14" stamped on the top. The model designation must have something to do with the serial number. I wonder is the factory mini-14 5f folder would fit a mini 30 reciever and barrel? I'd rather have the 7.62x39 mini then the .223 anyways |
How does one explain a Mini-14GBF then? It's like a Colt Sporter is ban but then there are Sporter II and "Sporter Lightweight" but no CT FFL one will touch them. |
There is nothing to explain, all the factory folders are banned. |

Gents, Just checked the ##'s on a Bushy AR I had in the safe and it turns out that it's a true-blue pre-ban. Being in Maine, I'm really not bound to any specific serial numbers, so I'm thinking about selling it. I'm not trying to hijack the thread and sell the gun here, but I was wondering what was the best way to get pre-bans advertised and sold. I know you guys in MA and CT have to deal with this, so why not ask the pros. Is there a strong market for Pre-bans now? Do you guys rely on the EE to find them or are there other places to post? I have been seeing a lot of stripped lowers instead of complete guns. Is there a reason why this is so popular to do? Just shak'n trees to see what ideas fall out. I'd appreciate any help you guys behind the iron curtain can give. Thanks, Scott |

With the price gouging on lowers going on these days, has the price or value of pre-bans lowers gone up as well? Prior to November pre-ban lowers were going for $550-$750. Now that $105 Stag lowers are fetching over $200, has the prices of pre-ban lowers gone up, too?
I've been thinking of posting a ad up to see if anyone is interested in trading a preban lower for some post ban lowers I have. What would the trade ratio be... 3 post ban lowers for a single preban? More? Less? |

Ya know..... I wasn't willing to pay this premium for a pre-ban until I fell head-over-heels in love with the CTR stock. Maybe I'll just pin one. (If that's not sacrilegious.) A guy in NY did up a post ban compliant LMT with a pinned CTR. Here's the thread. |

hi gang,
i have been following this thread with some interest. i checked on the bushmaster site and apparently they consider a pre ban rifle to be a complete rifle. http://www.bushmaster.com/faqs/afmmain.aspx?faqid=118 Question / Issue How can i find out if my bushmaster lower is pre ban or post ban? And does the preban or postban even matter anymore since the ban went away? Answer / Solution If you send me us complete serial number we can look it up to determine if it is pre or post ban. Only lower receivers shipped as complete rifles before the Federal Ban of 9-13-94 are pre ban. Some States have Laws that do not allow the pre ban type firearms unless the are true pre ban models manufactured before the Federal Ban such as CT, MA, NJ, Puerto Rico and NY the way i understand it is that the original federal awb's intent was a completed rifle is pre ban. once the ban was lifted this point was moot for the feds. since ct has it's own awb, even if it was ct's intent to define a pre ban as a completed rifle prior to the cut off date, there is confusion in ct's definition of how a pre ban rifle is defined. the two main components of the definition being, firearm and assault weapon. the other being manufactured and assembled. the above summary is the way i understand the ct awb after reading this thread. please feel free to correct me. i can not find it now but somewhere in the statute it talks about "converting" a firearm into an assault weapon. this threw me off because i was looking for assembled. sorry for not adding much but i spent all night reading and i'm a little blurry eyed this morning. i guess my question is, if bushmaster doesn't consider one of their rifles as a pre ban unless it was shipped as a complete rifle, doesn't that put many in jeopardy who assembled or converted pre ban lowers into complete rifles? has this issue ever been adjudicated in ct? i'm assuming not but unfortunately for us, that is the only way this will be answered. i'm worried, eventhough the wording of the ct ban might be in our favor, the ct da and federal da could ruin your life if you were the one they tried to make an example out of. eric holder has gone on record stating with his thoughts on the 2nd amendment and it's not encouraging. cl |

This is the one and only correct answer. It did not have to leave the factory a complete firearm. I wouldn't put to much stock into what is printed on the Bushmaster website. "converting" a firearm into an "assault weapon" would be if you took a brand new AR15 (post ban) and threw a collapsible stock, flash hider, etc on it. Considering this rifle would have not been manufactured before 9.13.94 it would now be considered and "assault weapon" by exceeding feature count outlined in Sec. 53-202a part (2). |
|
just for a peace of mind, i got confirmation from bushmaster my pre ban left the factory as a completed rifle.
best, cl ps. i have been able to purchase 223 ammo from most sources at all times. this was not the case a couple of months ago but the 223 ammo supply has seemed to caught up with demand. palmetto has wolf for $280/1000 and umc for $370/1000. |
