| anyone have tags for this unit? we drew one tag but have not hunted it much before. any suggestions of general areas? usually glass and stalk type of hunting. |

I have not hunted mule deer in this unit for a long time. And when I did it was around Gleeson. So many people have moved into the area since then. It sucks. We used to see white tail, mules, pronghorn, javelina, and a whole bunch of other wild life in that area back in the day. I do hunt white tail in the Dragoon mountains. So, that is the area of the unit I know best. I do see mules in the lower elevations. A friend of mine and her friends hunt this unit every year. She will not tell me specifically where, but it is south of the Dragoons and north of Gleeson road. You will find a lot of private land with locked gates and no trespassing signs. But, they get in there and get a couple of bucks almost every year. Other people tell me they hunt the area on the north east side of the Mule mountains. I do not know how to get in there, but it is supposed to be a good area. Another friend use to hunt south of the Mule mountains, south of Hwy 80. Unfortunately, this was all of private land. I also see both White Tails and Mules transitioning in both the mornings and evenings to and from the San Pedro between the San Pedro and Tombstone. However, I have never seen them when I have a tag  I guess I suck!Around the lower elevations of the Dragoons during the snow bird months they can be lots of people camping in the area. The last few years there has been an uptick of people hassling hunters in the area. Quite illegal but unless it has changed recently, Game and Fish does not have the people in this area to do anything about it. The further away from a road you are the less likely you will see them. Hopefully, this helps a little bit. |

I went to the area south of the Dragoon mountains this morning. It seems like a pretty remote area. I did not see anyone on this side of the mountains and no recent tire tracks. The vegetation was green and heavy. It is a mix of creosote, mesquite, grass, juniper, cactus, yucca, agave, and some oak. I did not get as far as some of the locations where I thought there might be water. However, I did find a Game and Fish water catchment system. I did not get close enough to see if it had water in it. On the way back out and a little further to the west I found two full cattle troughs. I did not see any fresh signs of cattle in the area. I did scare one good looking white tail doe. In my previous post I mentioned that I heard there were not any Game and Fish LEOs for the area. On the way out of the mountains I saw one in a brand truck. Really young guy. He seemed busy so I did stop to talk. It was a good day in the outdoors. |
