American Pioneer Corp. will be holding a land navigation course on Saturday May 11th in the Uwharrie Mountains. We will meet up at the Robbins Branch Trailhead with the class stating at 10am. We will be learning how to determine our pace count, find an 8 digit grid coordinate based on the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS), the differences between magnetic, grid, and true north’s, shooting an azimuth, and using terrain association to move from a known point to another point.

Maps of the area will be supplied. You will need to bring your own compass and a protractor.

We will be in the woods, so be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Water and snacks are highly advised.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

I'll put it on my calendar.

Will we be actually running a land nav course?

A modified one, but yes. We will be plotting points and going out to find them.

Bummer, I wanted to make this but 5/11 is the day I get back from a work assignment in Louisiana.

ETA: I bought a 3 pack of the protractors so let me know if anyone wants me to mail them one.

This will not be the only theme I do this one. I had a lot of fun out there with my daughter today. Hoping she catches the bug of being out in the wild more often.

I’m definitely interested, trying to make this work. I can let you know for sure soon. Do you have a general idea distance hiking (thinking of bringing my 10yr old).

Distance should be 3 - 4 miles with a decent bit of it off trail. There are bailouts along the way, too.

I hate that I am going to miss this. Enjoy gentlemen!

Can't make it.

Gonna be in Burlington doing classes with cadet staff for the summer encampment this weekend.

Also have to help brief the rifle range operations for the encampment week.

I would rate that class as a massive success!

Had several folks who had never done any land nav before, and we were able to hit our points within 15 meters over a 500 m movement
