I'm not a fan of open carry as a strategy but WOW!, another win for "We the People".

Im also not a fan of OC for most situations but its good to see the situation turning  around. When CA completely banned OC one of their arguments was that Concealed Carry was an option, despite the reality that it was an near impossibility for the average Californian and completely unavailable to non-residents. The wheels of justice  have slowly ground some of this bullshit down.

I'm a fan of open carry because as a Floridian, the only reason why I wasn't arrested when my shirt rode up was because I was an off-duty cop.

I fought tooth and nail to overturn Florida's Open Carry Ban, which was passed back in 1987 with Janet Reno's support.

December 11, 2025

Fort Pierce, FL – Yesterday afternoon in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the St. Lucie County State Attorney's Office and the Sheriff of St. Lucie County, representing the State of Florida, reached a settlement with Gun Owners Foundation and Gun Owners of America in GOA v. Del Toro. The lawsuit, filed in August 2024, challenged Florida's open carry ban.

Under the settlement, Defendants agreed not to enforce Florida's ban on open carry, and acknowledged that law enforcement agencies must align their practices with the right to keep and bear arms protected by the Second Amendment. GOA maintained, and Defendants agreed, that the open carry of firearms is "presumptively protected by the plain text of the Second Amendment" and that   790.053(1) is incompatible with the Second Amendment.

John Velleco, Executive Vice President of Gun Owners of Foundation, stated:

"Gun Owners of America has fought for open carry in Florida for years, forcing the issue into the political spotlight where it could no longer be ignored. Florida claimed to be the freest state in the nation yet it banned something as basic as open carry. That's exactly why GOA takes these fights and why we win them. We never give up. Our motto is simple: No Compromise."

Luis Valdes, Florida State Director of Gun Owners of America, stated:

"This is a major victory for Florida's gun owners. After decades under Janet Reno's 1987 open-carry ban, Floridians can finally exercise their Second Amendment rights without fear that a briefly exposed firearm could lead to criminal charges. This settlement moves Florida closer to earning its 'Gunshine State' reputation."

Alisabet Valdes, National Chair of Fuerza 2A, stated:

"GOA's open-carry win is a major step forward for Florida's Hispanic gun owners, many of whom feared harassment or being stereotyped if a legally owned firearm was exposed. This victory also benefits women, who often struggle to conceal a firearm, allowing them to defend themselves without fear of arrest if their firearm becomes visible."

Proud to have my John Hancock on that settlement.

Open carry has its place.  It is more comfortable and practical in many respects.  But there are obviously situations where discretion is necessary or at least valuable enough to make concealed carry desirable or necessary.  Each has its place.  And to ensure you can't get in trouble for accidental exposure while carrying concealed is another good purpose for its legality, although the laws in CA made this less of an issue here than in FL, which was a lot stricter with that stuff.

Personally, if I don't have a particular reason to need or want to conceal, I carry openly where legal, or simply don't concern myself with how open or concealed it is (and the level of concealment or lack thereof may end up depending on what I am doing at that moment, what I am wearing, etc.).

It's not clear to me what the actual impact will be here in practice.

IIRC, one cannot possess both an open carry and conceal carry permit.  You have to choose one or the other in the counties that can issue OC permits.  But some open carry does not require permits at all.

Wait so you have to get a permit to open carry?

Well, no, you don't "have to."   There's a fair amount of variation as to where and when.  Kind of like you don't have to have a driver's license.  Some places one can drive without one, some driving without one can be an admission ticket to enter the criminal justice system.

But if thinking "walking around out in public" like one might see in, say, Arizona, no, that kind of "open carry" isn't typically legal or even available for "permits."

Try here - California Rifle and Pistol Association

Personally, I do not feel they are effective or efficient communicators but the information is there,.... somewhere.
