I live in Indiana and will be headed to Kansas visiting relatives later this summer. I know I can have my concealed handgun on me while in my vehicle (and can't get out of the vehicle with it while in IL) and plan on only having 15 round mags for it. I have thought about taking a braced AR pistol and some 30 round mags to shoot at the relatives place but information on whether it's even legal to transit IL with the AR pistol locked in a case, let alone having 30 round mags is confusing. Anyone have any solid legal knowledge on this? FWIW, it's conceivable we could overnight in IL mid-way through the drive, but if that alone would be nogo I can avoid it. |

According to the state police website that's not a problem: Traveling Through Illinois with an Assault Weapon or High-Capacity Magazine Any nonresident who transports, within 24 hours, a weapon for any lawful purpose from any place where the nonresident may lawfully possess and carry that weapon to any other place where the nonresident may lawfully possess and carry that weapon if, during the transportation, the weapon is unloaded, and neither the weapon nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the transporting vehicle. If the vehicle does not have a compartment outside of the driver’s compartment, the weapon or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. |
