So far we have it the Red Woods outside of Santa Cruz, the pier at Monterey, Sequoia National Park and we just finish a couple days at Yosemite. Currently sitting in Livermore, heading to Alcatraz in the morning, then up to Eureka. The sketchy place so far was a Walmart in Fresno. Armed security, security roaming the parking lot, security camera islands, and the cops parked out front. Glad we entered Yosemite at 7 am, it was busy, but you could still move around and get pictures, no one parked themselves in the way. My biggest bitch, is the fucking pay to park, everywhere. We did go through the Winchester house. It's interesting, but I am highly suspect of the story told by the guides. Internet research conflicts with most of what they said. It was worth the stop though. Does the country side always look like it hasn't rained in decades? |

"... hasn't rained in decades?" LOL, yes, some places look like that all the time. There is also a more typical golden/yellow grass on rolling hills interspersed with dark green California Live Oak trees. To me, that is THE classic California lanscape. There is also chapparal - sage brush, manzanita and many other plants. Chapparal is native to California (lighter green areas in image).  When we get rain (December thru March), these plants go green in a few days. They go yellow again in about a month after the rains stop. Some of the hillsides break out in massive wildflower blooms, including the famous, golden California poppy. Some desert areas that normally look like the moon break out in a world-famous display of color. People flock out to the mountains and deserts to see the bloom.  The Carrizo Plain is one of those moonscapes that explodes in winter.  Of course, this is seasonal and all about timing. |

We just spent 5 days in Yosemite, didn't have one instance of pay to park so not sure what you're talking about there. That said, we were early risers so never really had to seek out parking as it was readily available. We're up in Auburn at Lake of the Pines now for a few days. A whole different experience for this hick from MN. |
