Wanting to visit Colorado springs and camp.

I'm looking for suggestions for free/cheap camping locations. Tent camping, but close to vehicle.

Thanks all

Are you asking about right now or next tourist season?  A bit more information would help us make suggestions

I expect CMSP has been sold out for months   https://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/CheyenneMountain/Pages/Camping-Cabins.aspx

There's National Forest campgrounds, but I would expect these to be full or reserved too   https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/psicc/recreation/recarea/?recid=12405

Dispersed camping in the forest is going to be busy and noisy depending on location and weekends, which may or may not be a consideration for you https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/psicc/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=12403&actid=34     Distance away from pavement helps somewhat.

This time of year most improved camp sites that can be reserved will probably already be reserved. Some were avalible on a first come basis, I'm not sure if covid changed that. Most of the public lands in the foothills by the springs falls under the Pikes Peak ranger district of the Pike-San Isabel National Park, my first stop would be their website. They did have camping info previously.

Most of the Pike-San Isabel national forest allows dispersed camping. But I've only used it as campsites that are much further out from civilization than the foothills of the springs so can't recommend anywhere specific. The easiest route would be finding somwhere that allows overnight parking and hoof it away from the car a bit. Rampart range road area will be busy.

*Pike-San Isabel National Forest, not national park.

Sorry OP, your schedule options are limited.

Roll the dice on a mountain spot not ruled by SxS assclowns living their best Whiteclaw lives all night long...or a reasonably-priced chain hotel not on the shithole side of town.

Search zip 80917 is my advice
