I was trying to figure out what this is called. I thought it was chow mien but when I google chow mien I get pictures of lo mien. I did some more digging and found out that this is actually a Minnesota regional dish and is a version of chow mien. Just that we are the only ones who eat this stuff. I didn't know about kung pow, general tso or Panda Express type of Chinese until college since this is all my parents ever got. Just some quirky Minnesota stuff to start your weekend!

Did it come out of a can? Because it looks like it came out of a can. Back in my poor college days in the '80s I'd occasionally have La Choy chow mein as a treat. Back then a can would have cost around $2.25 and made a single meal. Seeing as I was making $3.85 an hour it was a rare treat. Attached File |

I grew up with that being the vaguely asian takeout we'd have once in a while. From a place that made lots of other things but I never knew because my parents were the ones that ordered. ETA the chicken was cooked to look a little more appealing and was in with the sauce/gravy stuff though. |
