OK I dont like being unarmed but my wife is be inducted into something really important to our business. We will be staying in Palmsprings area at a nice hotel. We will be visiting realatives near Fallbrook if not in it. Goint to and from twice to visit and drop off MIL then pick back up. I want to bring a pistol. It will be a 8 round single stack mags. I want to bring the pistol and 3 mags. I have a locable hardside case. I will have it locked as I dont know the what rental we will end up with. I understand even if in the trunk with fold down seats its considered accessable so it need to be locked. I not sure on the magazines. Can they be loaded ? I think they can not be in the same case as the pistol. If they can be loaded (or not) what is considered legal ? another box ? softside bag with the lockable box in it? Or did I get bad info and be in the same case just nothing in the pistol? |

ETA - the description below only covers travel in your motor vehicle in California. It does NOT address air travel requirements. The handgun must be in a locked container. The handgun may NOT be loaded (no round in the chamber, no magazine may be inserted). Magazines may be loaded and may be in the same container as the handgun. If your handgun is in a locked case, it may be anywhere in the vehicle except the glove box and center console. Personally, I transport them in the rear of my vehicle (I don't have a "trunk" in my SUV). That is as inaccessible as possible. I am not a lawyer. If I have made a mistake, someone will have to correct me. |
| Assuming unthreaded barrel, I believe the air travel set up would be OK. I'm a little unclear on the TSA rules for loaded magazines, though. I haven't flown with my firearms. The Ca locked container definition is pretty simple, briefly: fully enclosed, locked. Now, that said, you'd want to secure it if possible, say in a trunk or locked/connected some way to make smashing a window and grabbing more difficult. If nothing else completely out of sight, etc., if parked unattended. |
| Perhaps some of us Californians need to start a cottage industry. We escort out of towners as they move around the state to ensure they are safe. I know there have to be enough paranoid folks around to make this very lucrative. |

| Take the Tramway up Mt. San Jacinto if you can and if you take 74 from Palm Desert west instead of going across I10 to I215, you'll get some rocky desert and higher mountain scenery if somewhat longer drive. Including the section of highway used in the opening sequences of Mad, Mad, Mad World. I don't know that I'd have a preference continuing on 74 through Hemet or taking 371 through Anza and Aguanga at Paradise Valley |

I have been all over California for work at many customer locations. That was 2014 and before but the world has changed a great deal since then. Paranoid. Yeah right. STL is pretty nice. 2014 you could go most places and at worst get your feelings hurt. Theres a few places I could drop you of on a nice balmy evening. I would not give you a 50/50 chance of seeing you the next day. I would go with my son to drop him off for his annual training in Chicago for the National Gaurd. I beleive he is safer now in the middle east. We would stay 25 miles away from the Armory. Totaly different world. Loaded mags are a no go on AA so the ammo will go into factory boxes going to the airport. Not sure if that is airline or air travel in general. The alternate route I was considering that for at least one leg. Its an area I have never been to. Thanks for the suggestion. My wife mentioned the Tram. |
| The whole area is hot and burny and some fires now. Your route choices may change some between now and then. If you go around north and take I10 to the 60 then 215 south, there's a air Museum at March Air Reserve Base and a railroad museum in Parris. Perris is a tad diverse. Otherwise it's just "affordable" (where not still ag or open mostly undeveloped, as opposed to beach front or mountain lake resort luxury). The 215 corridor is growing and getting more developed. Fallbrook and Escondido, Pala, are pushing past the names on the map and avocado ranching stages. |

Interesting you mention Fallbrook. I was at the San Diego County Fair last week and talked with a fellow from Fallbrook. I haven't been there in quite some time. But spent quite a bit of time there as a kid. He told me it wasn't the same. Too many folks moving in. Basically it's headed the way Temucula went. When it was the old 395 Temecula was a small community. When the built the I-15 and later the big interchange everything changed. For the worse. |

Well we are back. No problems and we had a pretty good time. We did the Tram on the afternoon we arrived. It was 120 degrees at the base. This was verified by a weather app on my phone. The car thermometer which I always thought read high. My son has an phone the has an actual sensor and it was 120.2 after 10 minutes in the shade. The 15 minutes or so ride to the top was 73 degrees. Felt down right cold. We paid 6 bucks more for the ride and dine. The food was worth 6 buck but not by much. Some of my wife's friends where there to attend the same event. 4 ate at the restaurant and said the food was so so also. One bought a 8 oz steak and it was 58.00 He was not impressed View was fantastic the food was not. We rode back next to last Tram. Not as many light at I thought but you could see for miles. Went to Joshua Tree National Park one day. Very neat place. I would like to camp there some day. For some reason there where plenty of open spots in July. Went down many side roads saw split rock and other stuff off the main road. We passed on Sultan Sea as it was 5:30 and we where on the wrong end of the park. I said the abandoned resorts and building where what I wanted to explore and we wouldn't have time to do much. My son want to go back sometime so we may do it then Palm Springs was very nice but like everywhere we did stumble onto an area. Downtown I think they called it. It was late looking for a place to eat as my wife went to the awards dinner alone after the ceremony. She knew I would not be happy with 200 dollar a plate hotel catering. Well my son got his grandmother into a Mexican restaurant that was more bar and had a loud band and they sucked. Parked the car and got yelled at by crackheads on the sidewalk about light shinning in their eyes when I parked. Was taking too long to get waited on so my son had me collect the car and pick them up at the door. We ended up going to Del Taco which was pretty decent. Palm Springs run by liberals ? If so I can see it going downhill in a few years. Hope not there is a lot of neat things to see around there. I have not eaten fast food in 10 years or more. I usually do Keto but just went along with everyone. We had the Del Taco which was decent but not so great i would go there too much. We did In & Out 3 times. That would be harder by far. Burger I thought was great. I tired the fries. They would be perfect if fried hotter for the same amount of time to get the outside just a tad crisper. My son lives in Destin FL and loves Whataburger. He thinks its a close 2nd and if considering price In & Out beats them 3 to 1 There tea was great and always fresh. The people working where polite and the place was spic and span inside and out. We picked up drinks and some stuff to fix in the room as we had a full kitchen and a outside grill. Strator I think it was called. I was shocked the prices where cheaper than home. 2L Diet Mt Dew was 1.75 that a buck cheaper. Gold Tea was .50 a bottle cheaper. Decent Ribeyes where about the same. |
