Official thread...
10th annual GA HTF MOA Challenge will be on October 5th, 2024 from 8am - 4 pm near Crawfordville, GA. what is it? A free day at a range for you to see how well you and your gear can shoot. Participants will shoot five - 5 shot groups on a single target at 100 yards. Prone with the use of a rear squeeze bag. gas / bolt / optic / iron sights... all are welcome, as are all calibers. Rounds will be 30 minutes and there will be 2 targets per lane, per round. Use them as you wish (one gun for both targets, or 2 guns and shoot 2 targets in the time frame). A spotter target will be available for each lane as well. The spotter targets will not be changed out, but taped up between rounds. There is no splitting a target into multiple sessions. After you retrieve your target, you measure your groups and add your name and average group size to the leader board under the category you competed in. Historically, we have many sponsors and we have had prizes awarded to best targets for gas gun, bolt gun, 22lr (50yards), youth (?), and best single group. I will update this thread when I know more about sponsors. There are about 30 lanes for shooting. That being said, you may only get to shoot every other round as attendance for this shoot has been growing steadily every year. schedule... Safety briefing approximately 08:45 range hot 09:00 range cold 15:00 awards by 16:00 I need volunteers to RO, help with parking, and possible scoring. There will be a workday No lunch this year. BYO lunch / drinks. There are 3 outhouses on site. There is a decent sized private parking area that is ~100 yards from the firing line. I will add links soon to the official MOA Challenge thread and YouTube video from a couple events ago. 6th Annual Ga HTF MOA challenge Please tag a buddy in your reply. Many people don't visit the HTF like they used to. questions... comments... excuses... let's hear them Update... official MOA challenge thread ***Rear bag update*** cliff's notes... 96 cubic inches is the max. so 5x5x4" is too large. From the MOA main thread (link above) 4. NO MECHANICAL REST/SLED, NO VICE OR SIMILAR DEVICE THAT SUPPORTS THE ENTIRE RIFLE, NO SHOOTING JACKETS, NO STRAPPING THE GUN INTO ANYTHING, NO LARGE REAR SANDBAG OR REST (NO V-shaped or formed shooting bag). SHOOTER MUST HAVE POSITIVE CONTROL OF RIFLE. It is ok to use a SINGLE small rear bag (ie: sand sock or squeeze bag) or bean bag that must require constant hand pressure to maintain hold on target (i.e. You can NOT sandbag the gun in place). Shooter must maintain positive control of rifle (i.e, you shouldn’t ground the rifle/bag to the point to where no hand pressure is required to stay on target). No formed or V-shaped rests/rear bags of ANY size will be permitted. The main thread lists a small rear bag as 96 cubic inches. We won’t necessarily be measuring bags at the event but use good judgement of what small bag dimensions are (5x5x3.75”= 93.75 CI). If bags are in question, they can be evaluated to determine if they meet requirements. Check with an event coordinator prior to shooting to ensure your results will count for record. The point is to see how good you shoot, not how well you can mount a rifle in a machine or sandbags. While this is a fun event, everyone should try to stick to the rules to ensure a level playing field. If you don’t have an approved bag, a loaner squeeze bag, or a custom corn filled *Gold Toe* sock will be available for use. Examples, but not all inclusive: Approved rear bags: Triad Red Tac Triad Wedgie (the small one, as they sell 2 sizes) CrossTac Squeeze bag Accuracy First shooting bag Attached File Un-approved rear bags: V-style benchrest bags of ANY size Large rear bags (if the bag is larger than a grapefruit, it’s likely not approved) Armageddon Gear Game Changers Wiebad Fortune Cookies Attached File If you have questions, send me an IM at least 1 week before the event to get to get clarification if your bag is acceptable. If you show up with an oversized bag, you will be provided with a custom squeeze bag that is compliant. If you shoot with an oversized bag, your score will not make it onto the leaderboard. |

And to hijack this thread....
This if from Brian Litz's Facebook page. If you dont know him; he is literally a rocket scientist that now runs a company called Applied Ballistics. He is a well known name in all the precision rifle shooting disciplines. Lots of background in science and statistics. he drives around a $100,000+ radar chronograph setup to matches and does custom BC work for shooters and their rifles, etc, etc. Also works with Berger bullets as their chief ballistician. He has 3 books out now regarding precision shooting, etc. Dude is the real deal and will blow your mind on some of the science stuff. Anyway....this is what he posted today. Maybe it will help some of yall figure out if your shooting better, worse, or if its just in the range of what you and the gun are capable of. A dialogue on dispersion A Beginner and a Guru meet on the range one day... Beginner: "I just shot a 1/4 MOA 5-shot group!" (posts pic on facebook #AllDayLong) Guru: "My guess; it's a 1/2 MOA rifle at best." Beginner: "How do you figure?" Guru: "Well, your excitement over this 1/4 MOA group means it's better than your average. A rare sample. Probably a 1-in-20 group. Since dispersion is random, you'll shoot a wide range of group sizes. Some will be small (lucky) and others will be bigger (unlucky)." Beginner: "I make my own luck. I mean, I just shot a 1/4 MOA group with this rifle and load, so that shows me the potential of how good it can be if I do my part." Guru: "That's not how dispersion works." Beginner: "What do you mean?" Guru: "Well, if you shoot enough groups with enough different rifles/ammo, you'll see that the Standard Deviation (SD) in 5-shot group size is about 30% from 22 Rimfire up thru 375 cal. This means that even when everything about the rifle/ammo/shooter is the same, 2/3's of your groups will be +/- 30% from your average, and 19/20 of your groups will be +/- 60% from your average." Beginner: "That sounds like BS." Guru: "It's not. I'll show you. Let's assume that 1/4 MOA group you just fired is a 1-in-20 'good/lucky' group. That would put it 2 SD's from your average. If .25 MOA is two SD's from your average, and SD is 30% of the average, then I'm guessing your average group size is closer to 5/8 MOA ( .25 = (X - 2*.3*X) ... X = .25/.4 = .625 )." Beginner: "Well, yea, I guess that is close to what the rifle groups on average. But I thought the bigger groups were due to something I'm doing wrong." Guru: "It could be, and you should definitely keep paying attention to fundamentals and consistent shot execution. However, even if you were the perfect shooter, always shooting from a rock solid position, you would still see a wide range in group sizes. It goes the other way too. If your average group size is .625 MOA (5/8), then for every rare 'good' 1/4 MOA group you shoot, you're likely to also shoot a rare 'bad' group that would be 1 MOA." Beginner: "How are you doing that math?" Guru: "I'll take you thru it. 67% of your groups will be within +/- 1 SD from the average. So if your average is .625 MOA, then 2-out-of-3 of your groups will be between: .625 - .625*.3 = .438 MOA and .625 + .625*.3 = .813 MOA. Likewise, 95% of your groups will be within +/- 2 SD's from the average. This is from: .625 - 2*.625*.3 = .25 MOA to .625 + 2*.625*.3 = 1 MOA. In summary, for an average group size of .625 MOA (5/8 MOA), you will have: 2/3's of your groups between .438 MOA and .813 MOA, and 19/20 of your groups between .25 MOA and 1 MOA." Beginner: "Damn, that is about what this rifle does in the long run, I just never thought of it like this." Guru: "When you understand how dispersion really works, it changes your approach to a lot of things, especially load development and any area where you're trying to improve precision by small amounts like .6, .5, .4 MOA. When you realize that a precision rifle system can produce such a wide range of group sizes naturally, you will make better decisions about load development, handloading, etc. For example, if you shoot a 1 MOA group later today, you won't go home and cut your wrists, or change everything about your handloading because you shot a 'bad' group. Instead, you'll understand that .25 MOA and 1 MOA are both samples from the same population with an average of .625 MOA (5/8), and an SD of 30%." Beginner: "That actually makes a lot of sense. So if my average group is 5/8 MOA, that means that 1/2 the groups I shoot will be bigger than 5/8's, and 1/2 will be smaller, right?" Guru: "Approximately, yes." Beginner: "Cool! Thanks man, I actually feel a lot better about this understanding than before when I thought I was just 'doing my part', not really knowing what part I was doing that mattered." Guru: "HA! I know what you mean, we've all been there." -end of dialogue- |
