Is that going to be 30 above grade?  Or how deep you want the pond to be.
I think we dont need engineering until over 15', but It can be deeper behind the dam.

That is how I plan to do one. Our soil is mostly clay and rock, so I planned use what I dig out to build the dam.

That probably explains the need for a keyway. I thought that they were more for strength. I hadn't considered leakage under.
