Circle hooks? Is this for stripers only? In 45 years of fishing the Eastern seaboard, I've never used a circle hook. I'm not against them, but I tied about a hundred long shanks for the bay and OC in a few weeks, so I'm annoyed. Some of the info says stripers and some doesn't specify. Also, they consider using dead bait "chumming" which it is not. For as many times as I've been inspected by fish and game, they never once looked at my gear. Guess I need to buy some non offset circle hooks. |

No, not specifically striper fishing only. This is a fairly recent regulation. Circle hooks are required for bait fishing tidal waters as follows: Regulations involving Hooks and Bait The following rules apply to hooks and bait use in Maryland’s tidal waters. In the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries: Anglers must always use a non-offset circle hook when live-lining or chumming; In March and April when using fish, crabs or worms as bait or when using processed baits, while not live-lining or chumming, anglers must either use a: Non-offset circle hook, or J-Hook with a gap equal to or less than 1/2" From May 1 – December 31 when using fish, crabs or worms as bait or when using processed baits while not live-lining or chumming, anglers must: Use a non-offset circle hook when targeting striped bass, or Use either a non-offset circle hook or a J-hook when targeting species other than striped bass https://dnr.maryland.gov/Fisheries/Pages/recreational/circle_hooks.aspx The purpose is to reduce 'catch & release' striper mortality, but the circle hooks are required when bait fishing areas and methods that may result in hooking a striper. |
