Hi, all. My dad passed away and I’d like to register his handguns in my name. I see a couple of different answers on line. Have any of you had to do this recently? Thanks guys. |

If you have a carry permit, you can fill out the form and turn them in. https://public.powerdms.com/MSP1917/documents/1742579 If you do not have a carry permit, you will need a purchase permit for every single one. I am unsure though, whether you would have to then go through an FFL with them. I know you don't with a carry permit. I did this with my Dad's guns a few months ago, but I had a carry permit and just filled the forms out, printed them, and turned the one copy in. |

Michigan does not have gun registration. It is a record of sales or transfers. I wouldn’t “register”. Guns the state doesn’t know about are priceless. If you get a CCW permit from any other state, like NH. You are exempt from the “registration” requirements. |

MI can call it whatever they want. As long as the state police has a record of the gun's serial number, it's a bullshit registration. |

I have Arizona and Utah but I’ll be switching to NH before Utah expires. |

People in Michigan used to take the train to Chicago to buy handguns at Sears. The AG opinion only confirmed it. A NH permit is $100 and doesn’t even involve fingerprints or photo. |

Not sure which gun forum it got started on, but it keeps floating around with none of the people able to show a single thread of Michigan law that supports the claim. As for transferring if you don't have a CPL, you can have a background check performed and receive a purchase permit from any police department's records division, which is how private non-CPL transfers are handled. An FFL is only needed if you're transferring handguns across state lines (only if the recipient or deceased is/was residing in a state other than Michigan). |

Yes, that is an opinion, not law, and certainly not the view of the current attorney general, which is why it's a poor defense at best, and a quick ticket to jail at worst. The amazing RINOs controlled Michigan from 2011 to 2018 and did nothing to remove the license/registration scheme, so I'd not put any stock in something claimed by one of their former AGs, especially one who's not going to defend you in court. Also feel free to write the current AG and ask her opinion about your not needing a license or whatever, I'm sure she'll 100% support you! |

There’s not a law in Michigan that criminalizes possession of an unregistered handgun. If fact even if OP filled out the paperwork it’s the responsibility of the “seller” or this case the estate or executor to send it in. You do you. Register your guns with the state if you wish. I won’t. |

Suggesting he shouldn't, opens him up to criminal consequences. I don't like the law, but it is the law. |

It’s the sellers responsibility to turn in any paperwork. $200 civil infraction for the seller if they can prove a transfer requiring paperwork occurred. |
