I'd really appreciate some responses from Illinois residents who have first-hand knowledge of the Illinois laws beyond the synopsis of what's on the USCCA website. In a nutshell, we will be traveling to visit family in Illinois (not getting within 100+ miles of Chicago) and I have some questions about Illinois gun laws. Every state that we're traveling through to get to Illinois has reciprocity with my home state, so Illinois is the only problem. We are staying with family so no hotels to worry about. 1.) It looks like I can keep my ccw pistol on me while in the vehicle per the quoted section below from the US Concealed Carry website. I assume that this means that I can carry it loaded on my belt as normal, as long as I'm inside the vehicle? 2.) If I have to leave the vehicle (need gas, flat tire, whatever), can it be left loaded and locked in the glove box? The blurb from the quote below doesn't specify whether it must be unloaded when storing in a locked vehicle. Anybody from IL with first-hand knowledge of the laws would be appreciated. 3.) Does IL have any restrictions on guns and/or ammunition and/or magazine capacity? In other words, any problem with Glocks or hollow points? The capacity shouldn't be an issue as it's a small pistol with under 10 round capacity; just curious on that point. 4.) Does IL have a duty to notify if we get pulled over? While my wife and I are both cautious drivers and don't speed, who knows if we'd get pulled over for something stupid such as a tail light burning out while we're on our trip. We also got T-boned by a drunk driver during a trip to IL several years ago, so having to interact with police isn't out of the realm of possibility. 5.) Any problems with passenger also ccw? 6.) I have ccw license, but wife does not. We're from a constitutional carry state. The USCCA info below makes it sound like she's fine carrying in the vehicle, too? 7.) Any problems carrying while on the property (acreage) of the family that we're visiting? 8.) While we're staying in in IL, are there any laws that we need to be aware of, like "safe storage"? When at the house, it will be locked in an case (think those apache gun cases from Harbor Freight) with two keyed padlocks (locks are NOT from HF, for those wondering). When stored, it would be unloaded, but with loaded magazines in the case with it. Are there special requirements such as an "approved safe or lock box" that some states have, or is this sufficient? 9.) Non-residents may transport a loaded concealed handgun in a vehicle if they are in possession of a valid CCW permit from their home state. Non-residents from states that allow for either concealed and/or open carry without a license are not required to produce a license provided they are; Not prohibited under federal law; and They are eligible to carry in their home state. Stat. § 66/10(h) and Illinois State Police Law Bulletin – August 2018 ] If non-residents leave their vehicles unattended, they must store the firearm within a locked vehicle or locked container within the vehicle. The firearm (and any ammunition): Must be stored out of plain view within the vehicle; and May be carried in the immediate area surrounding the vehicle only for the limited purpose of storing or retrieving a firearm within the vehicle's trunk. As per question #2 in O.Post ... the law actually says it must be locked up somewhere when in an "unattended vehicle". So.... if you're getting gas and paying at the pump, or in a manual self-serve car wash, changing a flat tire, checking under the hood etc. and you are at "or about" the vehicle, that is technically not an "unattended" vehicle. You still cannot leave the vehicle with it on your person (with the exception of transporting to the trunk area to lock it inside) but I don't see why you'd need to 'lock' it in glove box or console if not leaving the immediate vicinity of your vehicle. Just my opinion... Stay far away from Crook County. The sheriff dept. there does not know their own laws. |

Are all of these answers still valid? I thought that I heard grumblings about banning striker-fired pistols, but I don't much follow IL much unless I'm traveling there.
