I'm taking a couple weeks off in a couple of weeks and was thinking about maybe riding up to northeast Mississippi and checking it out. Born/bred in Mississippi and live about an hour from Jackson and have been all over the state (and a lot of the world) but somehow never made it to the northeast corner of my beloved state in my 55 years. For sure going up to Oxford for a couple of days to check out Faulkner's house, eat at a few places, check out the Square etc. but was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for any and all things NE MS? Where to eat in Oxford and best place to stay? Maybe drive the Trace some....any recs for that? Is it worth it to check out Tupelo? What about Corinth and Shiloh? I'm not a major Civil War buff (but a HUGE history buff in general) but I have a working knowledge of the war and I know how important these battles were. Worth it to see? If so, where to stay, eat, what not to miss, etc. ? Any small town unknown gems? I come from and live in a small town and I love it. Even if it's just some out of the way but worth it family eatery or other place, I would love to know about it. Taking my 16 year old daughter with me. She and I went to Japan last summer but I just want to stay close to home this year and see what we can get into. She'll probably be going to Ole Miss in a couple of years and I figured it would be good for her to see Oxford. Pretty much an open itinerary at this point....other than Oxford. |

Tupelo has Elvis' birthplace and Tupelo Hardware is where he bought his first guitar. There's a replica Vietnam Memorial. We used to have a kick ass auto museum but it's gone now. The Buffalo Park is ok but would be better for younger kids. If you ride the Trace, plan to stop at a lot of historical markers, otherwise it's pretty boring. Shiloh is pretty cool. There is a Civil War interpretive center in Corinth but not much else of note. Haven't been to Oxford in a while but there's a lot of history. There is an Inn at Ole Miss if you want to spend a day or two looking over the campus. |

I'm up around Corinth. Borroum's drugstore is a pretty good place to eat and it still has an old soda fountain from the 30's they use. The Coca-Cola museum is about a block over from it. Tisha state park is nice if you want to get out in nature a bit. I would see Shiloh just to say I did. Borroum's Coke museum Tish state park @code99 |
