Coming from rural SE NC.

Have family in Greenbrier, but don't want to be really close to little rock.

Have been looking at Marshall, mountain view, mountain home area.

Recommendations on places to look at and places to avoid?

Three entirely different areas you've picked.
Mountain Home has a large retirement community, right near a lake.
Mountain View is a smaller town, with an active tourist trade.
Marshall has lost population in recent years. I used to live there. Nice enough place.
I can recommend a good realtor I'd you're interested.

ETA: no connection to the realtor aside from having done business with him on 3 different properties. He's always been a stand up guy, and helped me a lot navigating the process.

Hate to mention it because housing is going up in the area and I eventually want to go back, but Clinton, Shirley, and Fairfield Bay are decent.
Fairfield Bay is one big HOA, though.
You'll have a drive if you need to work in person for a decent job.

Fairfield Bay is an expensive HOA... lots of of homes offered for sale cheap there because the monthly "roads" fees have gotten so expensive.

Yeah I won't be dealing with a HOA wherever we wind up.

I'm looking for more acreage, preferably 80+ acres.

How's the weather in the northern part of the state? Snow and ice regular in the winter?

Maybe 1-3 snows a year.
Ice is sometimes a problem for the trees.

Come look at Harrison. About 3 hours to Little Rock, 2 hours to the Northwest Arkansas area, 30 minutes to Branson, Buffalo River is right down the road as well.

I used to hear Bostonians sneer about how people in Arkansas couldn't drive in the snow. Then just over a decade ago they had a storm that was more typical for Arkansas - 1/4"+ of ice followed by several inches of snow... people lost their minds, slid off the road, etc. Power lines downed all over, one town had no power for a month.
We don't usually get heavy snows, but it wouldn't do to take what snow we get lightly... be prepared and cautious about driving.

Ok, so the move is happening.

Job offer is in Huntsville.

Anyone got leads on a pet friendly place with a fenced yard?

We will have to rent for approx 6 months while our place in NC sells.

Welcome (soon) to Arkansas.

Madison County isn't too bad. I have in-laws there.

Fayetteville/ Springdale is close so major shopping won’t be an issue.  Huntsville has some stores

West of Huntsville get more expensive and east will be more rural

Huntsville is a very small town, Wilson Combat is pretty close by. You get a job a Ducommun or Lew Thompson Trucking (that's about all that's there)? I'm about 40 miles east in Harrison.

We ended up finding a place in Fayetteville.  I work for the postal service. Huntsville seemed pretty nice when we visited.
