I have been seeing a lot of turtles on the road the last week or so and today a kick ball size snapping turtle was in the yard where the dog runs.
Just a heads up and watch out for the turtles that are out looking for a place to lay eggs.

The snappers have been laying eggs in the gravel next to the road for the last week. Some of them are huge.

We actually have "turtle crossing" road signs, and yellow painted warnings on roads  - like the crosswalks are in the cities -  here in Vilas & Oneida counties, mainly on roads that pass by wet lands or lakes where turtles are common. I carry a folding aluminum snow shovel in back of my Jeep for when I come across one in the roadway in danger of being run over, or causing an accident if someone suddenly swerves to avoid one. I scoop her up from behind, and deposit her on the side of the road she was headed to.

There is a stretch of road here that either the state or feds required a pipeline installer to install a turtle fence on.  Supposedly, there were never any of the endangered types of turtles seen in the area, but just the fact that they "could" inhabit the area prompted the required fencing.  It never ends.

Turtles have been on social media a lot the last few weeks.
I've helped one (painted turtle) across the road. Those guys can really scoot when threatened

The dane county humane society is asking for donations of Rubbermaid stock tanks for their turtle rehab efforts.
