Going to do some casual surf fishing with my sons next month and I am bringing reels but need to buy a couple of cheap rods (and hooks and stuff) that I will dump after our week.

Where is a good place to get used cheap fishing equipment.  Will be Miami at first and end at Jensen Beach, so anywhere along US 1 area would be good.

I've looked at Google Maps and I'm surprised there aren't dedicated fishing places that sale used gear.

I did see this, https://www.rodroomfishing.com/    but they don't say if they sale used rods.

Maybe check a pawn shop? No guarantees there will be anything of quality in there though. Most of the stuff I seem to recall has been overpriced junk. We have a used sports equipment store here. No clue if there is one similar down that way, or if they sell used fishing gear but its worth a shot to search. Hooks and stuff can be bought pretty much at any local sports or tackle shop. May be worth a shot to check local tackle shops and see if they rent any rods.

Worst case is hit up wallmart, bass pro, academy, and buy a cheapo set up, give it to one of the kids on the beach when you are done.

I've called a few about rentals.  I can buy cheaper than 2-3 days of rental.

Didn't think about a pawn shop.  But I don't want to eat half a day looking either.

I might just go to Wal mart if nothing else, like you said and give it to a kid at the end.

Bait and wait surf fishing or active cast/retrieve surf fishing?

For bait and wait the daiwa FT rods run around 20-30$.  They aren’t great but work.  I have one I loan out often.

Would check out FB market place to see if anyone is selling their gear. But sometimes it is sketchy as hell.

Pawn shops or cheap bass pro/Walmart combos.
Double drop pomp rings, fish bites, 2 sized circles and 1 to 3 oz pyramid wieghts...fresh dead or frozen shrimp or dig fleas.

But honestly. Any rod reel will work ...dont always need 10ft hvy wt surf rods...with 8k series reels

No dedicated shops for used rods because every flea market and yard sale has them out the azz.  My son is visiting from Chicago.  I bought him a rod and reel at Walmart for $19.00.  When he leaves, I'll trash it.

Walmart will probably be it

I ended up just buying the rods at walmart and brought them home on the plane.   Worked fine.

I got to fish about 8 hours total on the trip and didn't have much luck.

Caught a bream on shrimp.  Jensen beach.

At the Ft Pierce inlet, wasn't having any luck so I caught a couple of Atlantic Perch to cut up for bait.

Caught a Nurse on that cut bait.

Not the best fishing trip, but still had a good FL trip.

I'll post about the US Navy SEAL museum in Team.

Dont feel discouraged you didnt catch much. There are so many variables in catching decent fish that come from experience in the local area, tide cycle, time of day, season, what bait, what tackle, and so on... Adding that fishing from shore you can access these days only adds to the overall challenge. Having a boat or access to one, and basically knowing what you are going to target before hand is generally about the only way to be successful. Even knowing and doing all that and its sill easy to get skunked.

I normally catch several a day.  In these exact areas.

They just weren't hitting.

This was the first time I wasn't using my BILs rods.   He moved to DC.  Maybe they were +2 rods or something.

The equipment consists of a fairly short (9-10') Calcutta bamboo pole and a large lure of your choice that you "swish" in a figure 8 pattern on the surface of the water. A "green" 20+lb Snook is a double handful, so hang on tight!

This little boat basin is a block from my home and I've caught many a 20-25lb+ Snook over the years standing on that bridge.

That looks like a lot of fun. Where in FL are you? You can pm if you’d prefer.

I cant imagine a green snook on one of those! Hold on is right!!! Looks like as much fun/challenge as hand reel or hand line fishing.

The tuna fishery is something I have been following. Lots of places are going back to this very method! IMHO this should be the only way this species is allowed to be harvested. Screw the mega trawlers killing thousands of pounds of bycatch.
