My parents are giving us one of their vehicles soon. I have been trying to gather info on what needs to happen to transfer the title. Its going to be family transferred, so I think the sale price would be "$0 - Family Gift". Im guessing we both need to go to a notary together and fill out the seller and buyer portions on the back of the title and then I take that to the local title office to get everything transferred to me? Anyone else have experience with this and can give some helpful tips? Thank you |

Your local BMV may do the notary, but might not be able to update the title. I think only a few places can update titles. Check the Ohio BMV web site. I had to file for a missing title for my mothers car and get my name listed on the title to transfer it to me upon her death. We had to fill out a missing title form, get it notarized and mailed it to one of the Columbus BMV listed on the Ohio BMV web site. I did call the Columbus BMV to confirm everything as well. We got the replaced/updated title with my name added back in about a week. Edit. You can have the title notarized by any public notary. I did not want to imply it had to be a BMV notary, but you can do it at the BMV. I have bought used cars and met the seller at the local BMV’s to sign/notarize the title and get temp tags all at the same time. Then you would have time to get the title transferred into your name. Actually, both of you don’t need to be at the notary. | The title office can notorize, I don't remember if they charge but they probably do have a charge for that. The seller signature is the one that needs notorized, so the seller can do that ahead of time or go with you. If the seller marks $0 they may get a letter in the mail making sure that they really did give you the vehicle for free with no strings attached. The state wants to double check to be sure no one owes them any tax money. If it's crossing state lines, you'll also need an out of state inspection from the BMV. |

Ohio Notary here (Dayton Area if you’re local). For a title transfer; only the seller needs to be present. So only who is listed on the title will need to be in front of a notary when they sign. The parents would go to a notary and get it notarized that they’re transferring to you. You would then take the title to a title office (not the normal BMV) and they will fill out the second part and give you a new title. It would be wise to have a “bill of sale” saying it’s a gift, as the state is more concerned about the dollar amount for tax purposes and they do audit them. |

One of the folks in the dealer I work at did the paper and I just went to BMV and got new tile at one window, got plates-stickers, and off I went |

Also the BMV will not climb in / on a trailer. Lucky my Dad's 74 Jeep I inherited also has VIN on the door. Otherwise I would have had to winch it off and back on trailer. |
