...from democrats.

Seems that the paperwork that they had to file showing their donations to politicians showed that they donated $42,500 to republicans in the state legislature, including $10,000 to the House Speaker, but only donated $12,500 to democrats in the state legislature, including $2,500 to the House minority leader.

The group has been claiming since the middle of last year that they are bipartisan, but democrats loved them because they supported gun control.  Now that it has come out that they gave more money to the party that has enough seats in the legislature to do more than just complain about the other party, democrats are questioning their contribution strategy and reportedly condemning the group's actions.

Campbell (state senator Heidi Campbell) called the GOP donations a "kick in the teeth" to people who have fought for safer gun laws since before Covenant. House Democratic Caucus Chair John Ray Clemmons, D-Nashville, said "lighting their donors’ money on fire would have been more productive."

"Just to be clear- they're funding the problem," Campbell said in a social media statement on Wednesday.

In a post on X, Covenant parent, Nick Hansen called the contributions “cowardly and shameful.”

However, House Democratic Caucus chairman, Rep. John Ray Clemmons called the contributions “indefensible,” and pointed out the nonprofit made a $10,000 contribution to a PAC linked to Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) who compared the “Tennessee 3” gun protest at the Capitol after the Covenant School shooting, to an insurrection on the Hallerin Hilton Hill show on NewsTalk 98.7 in Knoxville.

“It was very disheartening to see [Voices for a Safer Tennessee] give such large sums of money to, for instance, an individual who called them and all the other families that came to the Capitol crying out for gun safety legislation, insurrectionists,” Rep. Clemmons said.

However, Rep. Clemmons told News 2 it’s not about the money.

“We don’t expect the money, so that’s not really the complaint. It’s the fact that these organizations invest against their own self-interest and what they proclaim to be their policy priorities time and again,” Clemmons said.

If it's not about the money, why were they considered such great allies before the paperwork detailing their monetary donations came to light, but are now being publicly trashed by Tennessee democrats?

Other than giving more money to republicans than to democrats, they seemed to be acting just like democrats.  Using a UPS store box as their address.  Buying a list of the people who left public comment on last year's special session of the legislature on the state website and declaring that those people are members of their group.  Claiming they represent the majority of Tennesseans, yet when they provide "proof" they appear to represent only a small minority.  Running a fundraising campaign and then bragging about how many other states had donated to cover the cost of lobbying to change TN state laws.  Using every chance they had to use the "do it for the children" argument in front of the news media.  Replying "no comment" to at least one reporter who asked what changes in state law would be needed before they were satisfied...

The gun-reform group Voices for a Safer Tennessee donated about $60,000 to state lawmakers ahead of this year’s election, with around 80% of the money going to Republicans.

The group, which formed in the wake of the March 2023 mass shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville that left six dead, including three children, pushed state lawmakers last year to pass a law allowing judges to remove guns from those deemed dangerous.

Voices for a Safer Tennessee is a 501(c)(4) political advocacy group and a political action committee, allowing it to shield the names of donors. A 501(c)(4) group is often called a dark money organization because federal and state campaign finance laws allow it to hide any donations it wants. The 501(c)4 made a $100,000 donation to its political action committee in January.

The group does list its board members and officers online. The most prominent member is former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has a net worth of over $20 billion from his stock in the Nashville-based hospital chain HCA Healthcare, which was founded by his father, and other investments. Frist is on the group’s advisory board.

The board chair is former staffer for Republican Gov. Don Sundquist and the group’s policy director previously worked in Frist’s Senate office.

The group also gave money to Democratic Sens. Heidi Campbell of Nashville ($1,000) and London Lamer of Memphis ($1,000); Nashville Democratic Reps. Caleb Hemmer ($1,000) and Bob Freeman ($2,500); and Republican state Reps. Andrew Farmer of Sevierville (2,500), Mark White of Memphis ($2,500) and John Gillespie of Memphis ($2,500).

Campbell told the Lookout despite Voices for Safer Tennessee reporting a donation to her, she “never received it,” adding the group attempted to give her a check Thursday after reports surfaced they gave money to Republican leadership.

Voices for a Safer Tennessee calls itself  “a nonpartisan, state-wide coalition dedicated to prioritizing firearm safety and advocating for pragmatic firearm laws.”

Could it be that TN democrats are now thinking that this was a scam to get leftists to donate to a group that would then funnel the majority of the money to republicans (after the group took their cut off the top)?

As democrats will not take the house or senate in the foreseeable future, donating to democrats is a waste of money if they actually want to enact gun control.  They need republican support.  A far better strategy is to support pro gun control republicans and outright bribes to leaders in the republican house IF gun control is the objective.

if the objective is just money laundering for democrats, well, thats different.

Exactly this.  These folks who are upset don't understand the finesse of the game, or the long game, or both. What a coup it would be for them to get enough RINOs to support gun control that they could get it pushed through even with an R supermajority.

They're upset because the out-of-state money that Voices for a Safer Tennessee collected (just their fundraising campaign for last November got them over $85,000, with the money coming from 19 states in addition to Tennessee) did not go solely to democrats.  It may not have been set up as a money laundering tool for democrats, but that seems to be what the democrats (probably those that were donating, in addition to the ones that were expecting to be receiving) viewed it as.

There is still the danger that you point out, which is why the shady methods used by this group needs to be pointed out as often as possible.  Maybe now that Tennessee democrats realize that the group is funding republicans, the news media might stop giving the group free publicity.
