Going to look at property near Kirksville in Adair county. Has forty acres of mostly timber. Told it is good deer hunting and it has several deer stands in place. I am looking to relocate from IL and have a place to shoot on my own property. Main interest will be clearing out a straight path and build a backstop to shoot on. Should i contact the county sheriff's office (or someone else) on any laws? What can you tell me about the area? Anything else should i ask for information? Noise complaints? Would look into getting suppressors if i ever move to MO.
Thank you.

My cuz has a farm at Bible Grove (30 min east).  I've spent a couple decades going up for deer season... lots of game, big deer.  The locals are very nice, gun friendly, and lots of Amish and Mennonite.... The ground is lots of rolling hills with a good mixture of row crop, and cattle.... seems the dang wind mills are spreading like crazy....

If you are getting it for deer hunting, I will say that MDC does do targeted culling in Adair County.

Targeted culling is when MDC employees go out right after deer season is over (Around January 15th to March 15th) and shoot deer at night, over bait, with suppressed rifles with thermals.  They do it six days a week (Monday-Saturday) from around 5 pm to midnight.  The aim is to drastically reduce the deer in the area so that any CWD prions that are present wont be spread around.

Just FYI.

My wife and I own land in Sullivan County (the county to the west of Adair). Compared to Sullivan County, Adair is practically a metropolitan area. The presence of Kirksville (and the college) means you'll have access to stores, restaurants and services without driving an hour or more. The rest of north Missouri is pretty isolated. Kirksville may be an exception, but generally communities in north Missouri are not thriving. The land up there isn't that good and crop yields are nothing like what you see in Illinois. There just isn't that much money up in those parts. My sense is most of the towns up there are the kinds of places people move away from, not move to. If you're self-sufficient and want to be left alone, it might be great.

ETA: As for shooting on your place, my guess is the most important concern would be your immediate neighbors. I can't imagine the county or any official entity caring what you do. Missouri essentially has no gun laws beyond what the federal laws require.

Hilly hardwoods, with mixed ag fields. I used to deer hunt just north of there, in Fox Valley Conservation Area.

I usually stayed in a motel in Kahoka, but sometimes just camped at FV. I'll try to find more pics, but here's one I took at FV.

My mom's family comes from Kahoka area. All from Clark or Scotland Counties. Grandparents and great grandparents are buried in the little cemeteries around Fox Valley lake. Ashton cemetery is right across the road from FV.  Land is fairly cheap and it's all farm communities. So it's high on living and stretching out space, but low on city conveniences.

If you need specialist medical care or like to watch a Broadway show once a month its not the place to live.
