If I'm understanding this correctly, the Montezuma County (Cortez area) Sheriff is saying "FU" to the new gun law requiring training before purchasing a semi-auto rifle. Effective 08-01-26 The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office will not be participating in the management and issuance of the training certificate required through the mandated Colorado Parks and Wildlife program for any person to purchase or transfer a specified restrictive semiautomatic rifle, shotgun or handgun identified by the Colorado Department of Revenue as provided by Senate Bill 25-003 effective August 1, 2026. https://montezumacounty.gov/public-information-colorado-senate-bill-25-003-c-r-s-18-12-116/ |

Facebook is full of comments praising him for this from people who clearly haven't the slightest clue what the law is or how it works. The sheriff can't "enforce" the law because there's no crime for them to act on. But by refusing to issue the eligibility cards, they guarantee their own residents can't go buy semi autos now. |

Well, if true, then that's a BIGGER problem than the law, itself. I'm reading it as he's not preventing any gun store from selling a semi-auto regardless of some "eligibility" card. |

I wouldn't read it that way at all. Basically if you are in Montezuma County, you have no way to get credentialed to purchase a naughty gun. The Sheriff should have said all dealers in Montezuma County can sell whatever they want to whomever they want under the full protection of my department. Any state interference will not be tolerated. But he didnt say that... |

The sheriff is just making it harder, or even impossible, for Montezuma County residents to obtain a permit. He's not telling FFLs they can ignore the law, and he's not saying he'll refuse to enforce it. But even if he flat-out said he wouldn't enforce it, dealers are still bound by state law, and state LE agencies can still enforce the law and take action against dealers who don't comply. |

You guys were right. Montezuma county posted an update saying you'll have to go to Durango to get paperwork done. Sounds like he's playing politics to increase his budget, at the expense of his subjects. F-ed up all around. |

As the OP, I originally read it as "good, we don't need that stupid card". I later realized he's f-ing over Montezuma county gun-buyers. Not sure what his intent was, but hoping there's a legal fight to overturn it. |

The injunction was requested, state's deadline to file brief was 1 sep, but we haven't heard anything about a ruling yet. I also believe the 3 day wait horseshit is being challenged as well. I know we have already gotten word from corp that there's an "off switch" in the GSM (4473) and POS systems so we can start selling fairly quickly (overnight at worst hopefully within an hour or so) if an injunction is granted. We don't have shit in the store at the moment of course
