how's the commute from there to Tipton Airport? new job starting soon. how safe is that area (Columbia)? |

Assuming day shift and running MD-32, "thick", but generally not too bad. MD-32 is a major connector between I-97 to Annapolis and points west/northwest. The westbound afternoon traffic really picks up as you pass the MD-198 and NSA area, but a lot of that dumps off on I-295 and I-95. The main problem with that commute is that the alternates to that route are cut off on the south side by the research center/wildlife management area and on the north side by Ft. Meade/NSA, and there are limited places to cross I-95 & I-295. No local in their right mind picks "The Parkway" (I-295) during rush hour, due to chronic stop & go traffic about 18 hours a day, except my wife, who thinks each daily fvckvp is an isolated exception. I-95 isn't always bad. Hopefully someone who makes that run can provide more detail. You can hunt/fish just south of Tipton on the federal property and in certain areas of Ft. Meade. Prince Georges Trap & Skeet is a pretty good shotgun range, also south of Tipton. Ft Meade has rifle ranges that are accessible through the Meade Rifle & Pistol Club. |

I hope someone closer to Columbia will reply... I live over near BWI and my limited experience with Columbia proper is that it is very much like a lot of towns in this area and it will depend on exactly where you are in that town. Some neighborhoods and shopping are more upscale, some areas are more sketchy. |
| A lot of it boils down to money. Higher priced neighborhoods are expensive. There are some very nice areas around Columbia. It's really a question of what can you afford? You by yourself or bringing a family? How long do you plan to be here? The area around 23 and 108 is nice. |

Lived in Columbia long enough for all three of my children to graduate from Howard High School. It was a great place to raise a family, but not so much anymore. Even the expensive areas are not without their share of the crime which has increased in proportion relative to the county's ever evolving liberal policies. Consider the state laws that make it impossible to hold juvenile offenders responsible for their actions, and crime is introduced into any area they frequent. I would not describe the area as "safe", but it is not as bad as most surrounding urban areas. |
