Of course that depends on what you consider affordable. There are parts of Howard County that are safe, but affordablity is questionable. Columbia and Laurel would be no go zones as far as safety. Unfortunately they are migrating out of Baltimore City here. I think some areas of Pasadena in Anne Arundel County are GTG. May be more areas in Anne Arundel, but I’m not as familiar with that county. |

I grew up in the Severn area and while I wouldn't call the area 'safe', I would say that it is safer than many areas around Ft. Meade. Used to be primarily farms, until some areas were built to be Section 8 housing (Pioneer City, Meade Village), which introduced a major criminal element. With mass transit servicing Baltimore and DC, no area is really safe any more. I live in a single-family home in a small community and have had vehicles broken into 3 times in 20 years, 2 of which were in the last 5 years. "South of Severn" is Odenton and Piney Orchard, a large area of housing that's close to Ft. Meade and not too bad. There is also a large number of apartments near the Arundel Mills complex, mainly to the southwest between MD-175 and the mall. Other areas near enough to commute easily would be: Millersville Crofton Davidsonville Glen Burnie Linthicum Ferndale the eastern side of Laurel (like Russet Green) I would personally avoid Bowie, western Laurel and anyplace closer to Baltimore than Linthicum/Ferndale. Montgomery County is a bedroom community to DC, and a liberal hotbed with very restrictive gun/shooting laws, high living costs and the main county I'd avoid. Prince Georges County is very high crime and another bedroom community to DC. You might try researching Anne Arundel County crime stats for hotspots to avoid. Maybe someone else can chime in and help. Sorry not to be of more help myself, but this area has been declining for years and is not someplace I'd encourage people to move to. Traffic is insane, politics are venomously liberal and crime is always on the rise. The good news is that getting a Maryland handgun permit is easier than ever. Good luck! |

I've gone back and driven through my old haunts, and wow, complete transformation into a shithole. Forget about Glen Burnie/Millersville - again they were pretty bad back in the mid-90s when I lived there for a couple years. Between DC/PG County expanding outwards from the south, and Baltimore from the north, the whole area is yuck... |

Ellicott City is safe. I used to live there and a lot of people work at FT Meade, NSA, etc Pretty much anywhere in Howard co is safe except the portion in Laurel and Columbia (Columbia isn’t horrible but the crime is higher than average in HoCo) Have him get a real estate agent familiar with HoCo and they’ll find him somewhere nice. BUT Howard co is a sanctuary county and has higher taxes than most. |

https://livewatershed.com This is damn near walking distance and has a range of options. Brand new, fairly nice. Drove through it yesterday. Patuxent greens is nice too. Benefits to both of those neighborhoods- 1. they aren’t pass-thru: meaning, if you’re not a resident or a visitor there’s no reason to be there. 2. you don’t have to get on any of the freeways, which are notoriously atrocious. That said, the beltway isn’t nice. Tell your boy to keep his head on a swivel. Lots of crackheads and sketchy folks. Thought I was going to have to “get it on” just stopping at a 7-11 yesterday. |
