Being able to mate a Colt 40MM barrel down the line would be awesome. So is that "D" mark what Colt marks them with today?
|
|
Quoted: Yes, all my barrel extensions have the same number, 8448315, which I'm assuming is a part number. And I did find 2 barrels with a "D" on them, they are both stamped about an inch or two forward of the handguard. My other 2 barrels don't have the "D" stamp but do have the same barrel extension numbers. All 4 of my barrels were bought as used USGI barrels. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/57664/20171210_170206-387182.JPG https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/57664/20171210_170214-387183.JPG https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/57664/20171210_170457-387185.JPG View Quote |

Lets just hope "D" does not mean "Defective", lol. Thanks for posting the pictures. Is the "D" raised, or indented?

So, after all the back and forth -- good information and tempers -- I am reading that the LMT barrel is the same as the Colt barrel (40mm). Looks like the serialized assembly is very similar, with some cosmetic differences.

Do you have a magnifying glass? Are the "D"s scribed, or stamped? View Quote Out of my 4 barrels, 2 of them have absolutely no marks on them that are in visible areas. The other 2, as previously mentioned, have a capital "D" in the slide channel, about an inch or so forward of where the handguard ends. Upon further inspection, both of the barrels with a "D" also have a capital "P" about 3/4"=1" further down the in the slide channel towards the muzzle. This "P" is inverted (upside down) in relation to the "D". I couldn't get a good picture of the "P" markings. I'll try again later. About the markings being stamped, engraved or scribed. A note here, these were both USGI damaged surplus. They both were 12" barrels that had a small dent or crack at the very end of the barrel. I cut them back to 9", lightly bead blasted them, and hit them with norrells molyresin so I'm sure the marks were partially degraded because of that. That being said, I struggled to decide how they were marked. As much as they look liked they may have been stamped, I'm not seeing the typical raised metal around the mark as you commonly see in stamped marks when the metal is pushed away. My gut feeling is that they were scribed or engraved. I'm also leaning this way because one of the "P"'s is definitely engraved in, the font is way to wide to have been a stamping. I'll have to try to get a picture of this but don't expect too much. My take on this.... The "D" means "Dimaco" i.e. Colt Canada. And maybe the "P" means they are proofed, but why would they engrave the "P" instead of just stamping it like every other weapon that is proof tested? Anybody have another idea? Hope this helped. Edit: I was able to get one shot of the "P". This is the one with the bolder font that I think was engraved. ![]() |

Or we could have just not put the deal together at all and none of these would have ever hit the market....but we like providing rare stuff since we like the stuff as much as most of the collectors out there and we know most people who buy this kind of stuff are understanding when there is a slight delay.
There aren't many packages that have not left our facility yet, so I'd say most have received their receivers or have a tracking number showing movement By the way has anyone determined the exact lubricant Colt used in 1973 on the M203s that were issued to the US Navy, I want to make sure my launcher smells just like theirs.... |
|
It was probably Lubriplate #130-AA otherwise known as part #L0044-004 or something very similar. That stuff was used to lube up damned near everything aboard ship when I was in... Well - that & Cosmoline.
The 2011 op manual lists CLP, LAW, LSA, & RBC as far as cleaners & lubricants go. LSA was pretty popular for weapons use, but I doubt it is what you're looking for as it doesn't really have a smell like cosmoline or lubriplate or even CLP does... |

Guys, what are your FFLs logging these in as, in their boundbooks/4473s under "type"? Receivers?

I believe mine was logged as "other", "40mm", "reciever only". in their respective locations on the form

They should be other, receiver, and for caliber if it came with no tube should be n/a if it came with a tube 37mm, NOT 40mm regardless of what it says on the receiver

question. Casually reading the armorer manual it mentions i have to mount the side sling swivel on the right. Why? I have a factory colt m4 upper with the sling swivel on the stock left side. I don't remember it getting in the way with a 203 mounted while I was still active.

It really depends on the type of sling that you're using, and whether or not it is slung at the time of use. Usually, when loading the M203, a right-handed shooter will have the barrel pointed slightly downward and the weapon slightly tilted with the upper side toward the right (bottom side toward the left exposing the open breach to load). in this position, it is possible for the sling (depending on type & stiffness) to interfere with the barrel release latch as well as block either the breach or muzzle of the barrel. This is mostly a problem when using the weapon when not slung. Here is a pic that somewhat demonstrates how the sling can block the muzzle when not slung. (& thus potentially block or slow the barrel from being opening properly) https://i.imgur.com/chcJyIR.jpg The 2011 Operator's manual makes no reference to side sling swivel use, though it should be noted that if you are using a side sling swivel (regardless of right-side/left-side use) that the swivel itself should be mounted in such a way as to point forward when laying flat against the barrel/swivel base. This is to allow the rail panels to be removed / installed without removing the swivel assembly. As for the original front sight base's sling swivel, if using a 9-inch barreled M203 along with a 20-inch barreled rifle - the swivel must be removed from the front sight base as any rounds that are fired can potentially strike against the swivel. If using a 12-inch barreled M203 along with a 20-inch barreled rifle, it is still recommended, though not absolutely necessary to be removed. Here the original swivel is removed & the side sling swivel is mounted toward the left side of the weapon (AF-4111 sling in use). https://i.imgur.com/0TBCMa1.jpg Original swivel remains though no sling is currently mounted. https://i.imgur.com/MNOCxRb.jpg Original swivel in place & still in use ![]() https://i.imgur.com/psD59rq.jpg Original swivel still in place with sling mounted directly to the barrel (no side sling adapter in use) https://i.imgur.com/O7Xc95o.jpg Another pic showing original swivel still mounted & no sling in use. https://i.imgur.com/6hq8Y1i.jpg Original swivel in place. Most of the M203/M4-types that I have been around used some form of front sight base sling mount, though most didn't use an actual side-sling adapter. They usually attached the sling directly to the front sight base using mounts like those pictured below.(AF-4111-style; 550 para-corded style mount; the metallic top-sling adapter/mount; or an eagle HK-hook-style mount, ect.) Mine arrived yesterday at my FFL, but NICS apparently crashed today. My dealer tried for quite sometime, some went through, for others it just crashed and crashed. They (NICS) stopped taking phone calls as well. The website states they have password reset thing going on, I don't know if thats the issue. Anyway, about 4 others waiting for theirs, none went through while I was there.
I had not visited the site since I bought it, and did not remember about barrels shipping separately. So I was a surprised when I did not get a barrel with it. Mine shipped on the 13th, after getting the UPS notice on the 4th. It's the one thing that bugs about the holidays. The extended delays on shipping. Sometimes it seems to affect everything. Nothing to do but wait, but I am glad I got an order in. I got my order in the instant I saw the email that morning, and hopefully I'll have a barrel for it soon. For me, a Colt marked 2003, even with a 37mm tube, just from a collectors standpoint is worth the short wait and a bit of hassle. Now just have to wait for NICS to unscrew itself. |
